Progressive people of faith: Al Franken

U.S. Senator Al Franken spoke about the influence of the Jewish tradition on public service on Wednesday at the 12th annual Carmen and Louis Warschaw Distinguished Lecture, hosted by the USC Casden Institute for the Study of the Jewish Role in American Life. The event was held in the Davidson Executive Conference Center........

His religious relationship with his childhood rabbi reinforced his ideas of righteousness.

To read more of how Franken credits his faith as an influence on his public work and his positions:

the tides would have turned and we would have had a more nuanced debate/discussion.

But here we are......perhaps he could run for Gov at some point. I like him, too.

They'd work well together. I absolutely think he can be 'rehabed' in the public eye and have a leadership position again. Shoot. Look at Trump! Franken just needs to decide to do it.

As for Warren, I know people don't think she'd play well to middle America - but I think she would. She'd have more than my vote (I'd actively politic for her).

can be traced to their religious roots and ongoing faith.

Just ask them, and they'll tell you. Often, unexpectedly.

And you consistently misuse meme. Might want to work on that.

I was trying to point out, in the spirit of "why are things so bad in here," how something might come across. Didn't say he meant it. Just wanted to point out how it reads.

And you came in and shit all over that attempt of mine to increase the spirit of discourse. When are you going to start owning up to the fact that you are part of the problem? I realize I am part of the problem and instead of saying that this post was telling us to fuck off, I tried to indicate how it read and give a chance for a response.

So why would you even say something like that? What in the response would lead you to assume motivation?

One reason why things might be so bad, assuming that you are referring to the tone here, is that some here seem to reflexively attack any post that attempts to present faith in a positive light. And the responses in my series illustrate exactly that.

Because that's how it came across. Notice I didn't say "So it's just fuck atheists, then?"

Do you really need that major of lessons in tone and what it is?

you were assuming a motivation. What in the response led you to assume that particular motivation?

Yes, I assumed a motivation. Rather than assume I was correct in that assumption, I made the point so that someone could be aware of how what they have written might be taken incorrectly.

I'm not going to parse out interpretation of someone else's post with you. If they want to talk, I'm game.

Pragmatic Dem was just banned for being a returnee of a previously banned troll (https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=profile&uid=346037 ) who, by their own admission, had re-joined as a sock/zombie to bypass a long-ago FFR'ed account (which is clearly against the rules) https://www.democraticunderground.com/1218266573#post48

And if I remember correctly, the incessant tag-teaming and over the top personal attacks in religion was one of the (many) reasons that justin was (repeatedly) FFR'ed to begin with....(again)

So you have to give Gil a little bit of time to (again) mourn the (repeated) loss of his friend (again) who couldn't contain himself (again) and who tried to bypass the rules zombify himself (again) and come back and harass atheists (again) only to be banned (again) by admin (again).

Remember, Justin wasn't banned/timed-out/FFR'ed once. It was a multi-time affair. Poor thing just doesn't seem to get it. I'm surprised his main account isn't banned for the obvious zombification and circumvention of the FFR.

ah well.

ironically enough, those tactics are constantly employed. But only by one side.
