Methodist Denomination May Split over LGBTQ Marriage Issue

Now, most people think of the Methodist denomination as one of the most stable of Christian denominations. But, it ain't necessarily so. For the past few years, the question of whether Methodist churches can host and bless LGBTQ marriages has been a divisive issue, even though such marriages are legal, now, in all 50 states. Will this split the denomination? Hard to say. It's still in dispute.

Will views on same-sex marriage split one of America's largest Protestant religions?

Just how divided is the United Methodist Church?

Many of its 12 million members are engaged in an internal battle that could break up America's second largest Protestant denomination.

At issue: Whether or not to change its rules to allow same-sex weddings and LGBTQ clergy.

Two years ago, in Portland, Ore., the United Methodist Church narrowly avoided schism — breaking up — during a heated General Conference meeting of 800-plus delegates from around the world. The delegates voted 428-405 to accept a recommendation from their bishops to delay the fiery debate on homosexuality, let a commission study the church's controversial rules on human sexuality and then take up the issue again in 2019 at a special General Conference — the denomination's top legislative body.

Christianity began splintering as soon as it began, and the beat goes on.

Congregations have bolted over ordaining women, over blessing interracial marriages, over who is head of the church even which bible or hymnal to use.

The Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America went through this already and they survived, albeit smaller in numbers and so will the United Methodist Church. The real silver lining is that those that remain are usually have a deeper commitment to the church.

Then the anti equality folks can become Baptists

Short story:

In the early 70's my folks were living in small town Missouri. The local Methodist church had a new minister that was originally from the MN/WI area. The church attendance had been falling, as a matter of fact you could see a line of folks leaving the Methodist church just after Sunday School ended to walk down the block to the Baptist church for the main service. I was going to school but on a visit to my folks decided to see just how bad the services were to cause such a blatant exodus.

Well, the minister was a pleasant older fellow with a homey style. He was talking about growing up in the Northern Midwest and how many of the families were descended from Nordic and Russian immigrants (think Prairie Home Companion). He was saying that they were hardworking folks, especially the Russians, just like us. They loved their families and sacrificed to make their lives better, especially the Russians, just like us. And, they had close knit communities, especially the Russians, that were often wary and hard to get to know for outsiders, JUST LIKE US!

Well, those that were still coming to his services lined up to shake his hand and thank him for the wonderful sermon. Anyway, everyday folks tend to be the same in most places. Some want enlightenment and some want pandering, JUST LIKE US.

The funniest joke

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump. I ran over and said: "Stop. Don't do it."

"Why shouldn't I?" he asked.

"Well, there's so much to live for!"

"Like what?"

"Are you religious?"

He said: "Yes."

I said: "Me too. Are you Christian or Buddhist?"

"Christian."

"Me too. Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

"Protestant."

"Me too. Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?"

"Baptist."

"Wow. Me too. Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?"

"Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?"

"Reformed Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?"

He said: "Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915."

I said: "Die, heretic scum," and pushed him off.
