Religious freedom measure soundly defeated

Published June 12, 2012, 11:06 PM
By: John Lamb, INFORUM

FARGO – North Dakota voters are happy with their current level of religious freedom, defeating Measure 3 in Tuesday’s election.

In complete but unofficial results as of 12:30 a.m., 36 percent voted yes and 64 percent voted no.

- snip -

Measure 3 would have amended Article I of the North Dakota Constitution by adding: “Government may not burden a person’s or religious organization’s religious liberty.”

- snip -

Opponents said Measure 3 was worded vaguely, could lead to “freedom of religion” being used as a defense in criminal cases and was unnecessary as religious freedom is not threatened here.

honor killings. this is a for instance. perfectly ok to some religions. applying such a law would make it legal to kill a woman in that way. some religions believe in bigamy. well, that is currently illegal, but under such a law as proposed, would it now be legal? Somehow I think the supporters only mean for them... not for 'other' religions.

I had not seen any polling data or even pundit's guesstimates for this one. I am glad the people of North Dakota feel this is not the time to start messing around with Constitutional protections that have by and large served them well over time.

Plus this would have absolutely been challenged in the federal courts and made N.D. a target for national ridicule.

to retire the Fighting Sioux mascot and to retain property taxes

On the other hand, it looks like Measure 1 passed, and the state Constitution is amended to allow legislators to be appointed to statewide office
