Poll: Most Americans do not identify Obama as Christian

Republicans from time to time have accused President Obama of playing identity politics. Here's the problem: The electorate remains confused about his identity.

The problem is most famously manifested in persistent conspiracy theories, driven by conspiracy-loving “birthers,” about Obama's birthplace and citizenship. But voters remain muddled about his religion as well, as a new Gallup poll confirms.

The poll released Friday shows that just 34% of Americans can identify Obama as a Christian or, more specifically, as a Protestant. Eleven percent remain convinced that he is Muslim, and 44% say they don't know.

That is striking, because few presidents have spoken and written as much about their faith as Obama. His Christianity, in fact, ignited the biggest controversy of his 2008 campaign when incendiary videos of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's longtime pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, went viral on the internet. Obama eventually severed ties with Wright, and since then has attended a variety of Christian churches. He uses Christian language and imagery often in speeches.

How do you draw that conclusion from this? cbayer Jun 2012 #8

Jesus Christ himself could show up for an Obama event and endorse him and it wouldn't matter.

There is nothing Obama can do or say to make some Americans to believe he is a Christian. The OP notes he has expressed his Christian beliefs often yet people don't believe him.

I am saying if Jesus Christ actually came and said yes he is a Christian some Americans would not believe it.

Thanks for asking for clarification. I wish other would do this if they don't understand what a post means.

One of the points of the article is that a good number of people just don't know an don't seem to care.

That's a good sign, imo.

The part of the population that continues to maintain that he is Muslim are not going to change no matter what, I totally agree.

It's easy to ask you questions. You are consistently civil and reasonable.

Actually I wish none of our presidents felt it important that they constantly remind us how christian they are.

44% surveyed said they didn't know and apparently didn't care!

IMHO, that's very good news and signals a strong turn of the tide.

how many think he was born in Kenya, how many think he is a Muslem, how many think he is gonna get our guns, add infinitum, what else can you conclude? These folks didn't just all come up with these ideas out of a vacuume. They have been bombarded with propoganda and it is working. I could give a whole page of examples (and so could you) but let's just take the teabags. Millions of old, poor, white folks who think the 1% have their best interests in mind contrary to all rational evidence. They believe this shit because they are exposed to almost no information to the contrary. The Dems should be all over the lies like thunder and lightning but mostly we hear crickets. Where is the pushback?

It's the disinformation campaigns that they are good at. And I agree, Democratic response to this leaves a lot to be desired.

I think dems (and liberals in particular) have this rather laissez faire and naive attitude that if you just put the truth out there, everyone will recognize it and ignore those silly claims to the contrary.

So not true, as we see over and over again. But that non-judgmental, tolerant, inclusive attitude is what makes us good as well.

While the repubs may be better at the game, I don't want to be one of them.

Unfortunately, all to often in the corporate media which is owned by the 1%, that voice is not heard. Media consolidation is a big reason for that. I blame the Democratic Representatives for being complicit in allowing that to happen. They could have and should have fought it loudly and vigorously. It is not good for Democracy and it certainly has not been good for the Democratic party, yet is is allowed again and again with not so much as a whimper.
