http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/06/24/louisiana-schools-teach-that-existence-of-loch-ness-monster-proves-creationism/One ACE textbook Biology 1099, Accelerated Christian Education Inc reads: Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland? Nessie for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur.
Another claim taught is that a Japanese whaling boat once caught a dinosaur. Its unclear if the movie Godzilla was the inspiration for this lesson.
Jonny Scaramanga, 27, who went through the ACE programme as a child, but now campaigns against Christian fundamentalism, said the Nessie claim was presented as evidence that evolution couldnt have happened. The reason for that is theyre saying if Noahs flood only happened 4000 years ago, which they believe literally happened, then possibly a sea monster survived.
If it was millions of years ago then that would be ridiculous. Thats their logic. Its a common thing among creationists to believe in sea monsters.
Thanks to Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, this type of education is being funded with tax dollars, at least in Louisiana.
....
In Scotland, they hope to laugh all the way to the bank. Nessie expert Tony Drummond invites Americans to come see the monster who most think doesnt exist.
Just to review - 'Nessie is real' isn't even the craziest thing in the "ACE programme".

(2,560 posts)I've driven along both north and south banks of Loch Ness. Telling my young kids to be on the lookout for Nessie was a great way to keep in-car fighting to a minimum.

(146,218 posts)How embarrassing that this is happening. Jindal is not a stupid man, by any means. How he is supporting this is beyond me.

(48 posts)Here in TN, they have taken steps though new legislation to allow creationism back into the classroom. This law turns the clock back nearly 100 years here in the seemingly unprogressive South and is simply embarrassing. There is no argument against the Theory of Evolution other than that of religious doctrine. The Monkey Law only opens the door for fanatic Christianity to creep its way back into our classrooms. You can see my visual response as a Tennessean to this absurd law on my artists blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/04/pulpit-in-classroom-biblical-agenda-in.html with some evolutionary art and a little bit of simple logic.
