Interesting perspective on the GOP race from "Morning Joe"

(yes, I know how you feel about the host...)

Chuck Todd was saying that some mainstream Republican consultants want Santorum to get the nomination...

The theory is:
- if Mittens wins the nominations and loses the election, the Party will learn nothing. The RW will say, "see, we needed a candidate that was more conservative", and there'll be another four years of internal conflict.

- if Santorum wins the nomination and loses the election by 20-odd points, the mainstream will have an opportunity to weed the Tea Party kooks out and rebuild.

And the Republican baby will flow out the drain with the bath water they have been bathing in.

What it says is, the repubs are conceding the presidential election. They have lost hope and are already into the blaming mode.

We saw them go through this in the aftermath of the 2008 election. That is when the party blamed Mccain and embraced the tea party. We would see the opposite with a Santorum candidate loss. Which would be a good thing for the country. It is not healthy to have a radicalist at the head of one of the two major parties.

This also points to the gaining of the idea that Romney could actually lose the primary. ALl great news for Democrats.

done that since I threw a vase at my tv (him) in 2008. I was shocked to see him heralding the absolute doom of the Republican Party and totally SLAMMING Santorum. I wish I'd taped it. It was quite refreshing.

hopefully the Dems can move more to the left.

I feel like the conversation in this country has moved so far to the right that it has pulled the dems along with them.

He is the better opponent.

When he loses the Evangelists will say they weren't faithful enough and blame the Mormons.

Humiliate Romney and then keep him in, would be the best option for 2016.

9. I don't agree with this argument...It fractures their constituency. Say Santorum wins and loses

by 20, does anyone think all those extreme right wingers would have enough intellect
to just say, OK, let's go moderate? They will never go away. It would only
force the advent of a stronger wingnut third party, and Repukes would be left
with a minority party. Hey, that actually sounds good ! Do it

made sure they weeded out the moderates. Not that I care because I would never vote against my financial interest in the first place. I may not agree with all the social issues but I do believe everyone has a right to their own way in life. It is not for us to judge others.

...for them to weed the kooks out in a significant way. They've relied on them for far too long, and they've proven how foul a term the TPers consider the word "compromise".

If they try to walk it back slowly, the kooks will be an albatross around their neck for a long time. If they try to do it fast, they're setting the stage for a schism where the kooks take a hike from the "mainstream Republicans" and rally around their own party (or AmericansElect-style quasi-party).

The key will be what happens with the conservative's radical media machine(s). Right now they may all feed into the "government/liberals/Democrats are evil/stupid/the enemy" narrative but it actually has too many heads to really coordinate once the target shifts. Which way will Rush jump? What about FOX? What happens if Bad Things happen to Rupert due to the phone hacking scandal? The Moonie Times? All those think tanks and foundations? All the other radio ranters? The evangelicals and fundamentalists with their own media networks?

When one side figures that "traitors" are cutting them loose, who will survive the long knives? And what will be left?

And how many of the rest of us will they take down while they hash it out?
