2016 Postmortem

Xxx -
I want to share something with you that is probably going to make you angry, but then I am going to give you an opportunity to do something about it.
For months, you've heard the Clinton campaign endlessly repeat in interviews and on social media that they have raised millions and millions of dollars for state parties through something called the "Hillary Victory Fund." They've even used it as an attack line to insinuate Bernie wasn't willing to help down-ballot Democrats.
Well, yesterday morning, thanks to a Politico investigation, we found out that less than 1 percent of the $61 million raised by the Victory Fund has stayed in state party coffers. And indeed, the majority of the money spent by the Victory Fund has gone to benefit Hillary Clinton's primary campaign against us. The piece said some state party fundraisers believe they are basically acting as "money laundering conduits."
There's more, but first let me get to the part where you can take action. In recent weeks, the Clinton campaign has expressed a lot of interest in what is important to Bernie's supporters. Here's your chance to send a message about our distaste for big-money in politics:
Sign our petition calling on the Clinton campaign to stop bending campaign finance rules to their breaking point, and immediately transfer all the money allowable to the state parties participating in the "Hillary Victory Fund."
Here's how the scheme works for the Clinton campaign:
Rich people like Alice Walton of Walmart who have already contributed the maximum amount allowable to the Clinton campaign can contribute an additional $350,000-plus to the Victory Fund.
The first $33,400 of her contribution is supposed to go the DNC, and the rest divided up between participating state parties. But that's not what's been happening. The Victory Fund has mostly been doing one of two things with Ms. Walton's money:
1. Taking that money and spending it on advertisements and small-dollar fundraising solicitations. Then they take all the small-dollar contributions and data reaped from Alice Walton's contribution and transfer it directly to the Clinton campaign. This tactic is basically a way for them to benefit from a contribution much larger than the legal limit from Alice Walton.
2. They take Alice Walton's money and transfer it to state parties, who then immediately transfer it to the DNC. Often times they do it without the state party even knowing because the Clinton campaign controls many of the bank accounts involved. So at the end of the day, most of the state parties have received exactly $0 from their Victory Fund arrangement.
So, now that we know the Clinton campaign is taking advantage of state parties to skirt fundraising limits on her presidential campaign, it's time for her to do the right thing and let the state parties keep their fair share of the cash:
Sign our petition calling on the Clinton campaign to stop bending campaign finance rules to their breaking point, and immediately transfer all the money allowable to the state parties participating in the "Hillary Victory Fund."
It's unfortunate that Hillary Clinton has benefited from tens of millions of dollars in cash transfers and advertising to campaign against us in the primary. But it's not too late for her campaign to do the right thing by the state parties we're going to need to win elections up and down the ticket this November.
I'm sure if you sign our petition, that is something they will notice.

(47,209 posts)dispersals of cash to states. They are just starting to distribute the cash to states now- as they are figuring out where the cash is needed. So blatantly dishonest- I wonder if SBS knows this?
You people will buy anything. Couldn't be that this looks really bad and she is doing that in response to the optics.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Oh no- that would make too much sense. It has to be a conspiracy!
kaleckim
(651 posts)up until it becomes public, then does something, and there's nothing to critique? What the hell has your party become?
This isn't about a conspiracy, it's another example of corruption that you all are providing cover for. Don't expect anyone to take any of you seriously when you pretend to be against Citizens United.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)better than sitting on your hands and claiming their is money laundering going on just because you do not understand it.
That is sour grapes bullshit, and it will not help getting us back seats in congress.
they have created a process to funnel money to HER, and it allows even more money to be given to her by the super rich. Either you don't understand this or are pretending otherwise. My god, how many vile things have you people defended in this election cycle?
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)and that shit is pretty short sighted at this moment in time. but have at it with the hatred.
kaleckim
(651 posts)that you pay lip service to being against Citizens United and the rich controlling candidates like Clinton, but have no real interest in ever changing the situation. There is no way in hell most Democrats would be okay if Republicans were doing this, nor should they be.
This is the same mindset that excuses Clinton for being neck deep in corporate and Wall Street bribes, sorry, campaign donations.
Because of people like yourself, Clinton cannot use the corruption of the Republicans in the coming election, which places her at a huge disadvantage. People like yourself are downright tone deaf, you just don't seem to grasp how much people are sick of this type of stuff.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)to get that and a host of other things I am not sure your candidate cares enough about.
You don't seem to grasp how badly SBS is losing because of this one issue purity test schtick.
kaleckim
(651 posts)Yep, my opposition to the trade model your corrupt candidate supports isn't about job losses, stagnating wages, the decimation of unions, or factories closing (data, facts, reality), it's "ideological purity", says the person cut off from the impact of those policies. Must be nice. My opposition to Clinton's corruption isn't principled, and she and her husband getting 3 billion since entering politics from corporate interests has had no impact on people like myself. It isn't as if they backed policies that benefited those groups at my expense, right? Again, "ideological purity". Me not wanting to march like lemmings to the coming ecological collapse (which isn't over the top rhetoric), wanting radical changes (and quickly) because moderate solutions won't be enough is about "ideological purity". Her backing fracking as strongly as she did, and her recent about face on coal, has no real world impact what so ever. Say, can I pay for a seat on your spaceship to another habitable planet? If not, I'm sure people like yourself (real deep thinkers) can have a sit down conversation with Mother Earth about what is or isn't "pragmatic".
This "purity" thing is a catch phrase you people use when you can't defend what you're doing on moral or logical grounds. Like, if I don't like that she has been meeting with corporate lobbyists since she entered the race, you'll yell "purity", cause you really can't have an adult conversation about corruption, in particular, HER corruption. I don't know who you think you're fooling with this BS, but it isn't working with most of the country. Polls don't lie, even if you do.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)without working with others. Our system as it is is designed for incremental change. It sucks that it has become stagnant because voters seem only interested in a candidate once every 4-8 years while knowing or understanding little of the process.
I call THAT refusing to have an adult conversation.
kaleckim
(651 posts)For one, at times, the system HAS changed pretty quickly. After the crash in 1929, the system didn't wait for incremental change, because the left scared the hell out of the power structure. That's the exact road we're heading down now, and the Democrats are doing a horrible job making sense of what is happening. I don't see how the pending ecological crisis doesn't get people seek quick radical change, there is no argument to be made that we have lots of time. We don't. If we do moderate, quarter measures, it's over. Period.
Beyond that, none of you can make an argument that there has been incremental improvements, whether the Democrats are in power or not. It has gotten incrementally worse for most people, which is why you see so much anger and why so many people are becoming radicalized. God forbid the left actually start pushing, and not continue to give a monopoly to the right as far as pushing both of the parties.
You can say all you want about incremental improvements, there is no evidence of it. None at all, and you seem to think that those improvements will emerge by doing the exact same things, supporting the exact same politicians and ideas. There's a definition for that, you know.
"while knowing or understanding little of the process."
I'd be willing to bet I know more about the Clinton's and Obama's record than people like yourself. I don't need any damn lecture by a group of people that have refused to have adult conversations about the Democrats' likely nominee for months now, and refuse to critically analyze her record or corruption.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Not surprised many here don;t give a shit about that.
And a depression that happened compared to a scare that may happen in the next 30-50 years is the same? Nope.
And I am geeing this is why people are so pissed Obama prevented a global depression with the bailout- same folks hoping Trump bring on the pain. No thank you.
The process I am saying folks are ignorant to- is the electoral process. There is a spate of conspiracy theories about how practices in place for decades are new and put in place to hurt Bernie, or inherently corrupt. It is pure ignorance. You'd actually have to pay attention to know that though. You want to fix the system? Awesome- but it takes years. Start doing your part, and reap the benefits in 8-16 years.
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)There's no more time for incrementalism.
You are so wrong thinking there isn't a global catastrophe looming on the horizon as scary as the Great Depression. Severe climate and environmental events will soon make even the Great Depression look mild.
Hillary Clintons proposals doom humanity as surely as climate change deniers. Too little too late. You'll own that.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)there right now. It is, as both candidates have said the best place to concentrate dollars for a jobs program- as Hillary was talking about to bring solar manufacturing to coal country. I think Hillary will have more success selling it.

Fracking, TPP (just needs a few tweaks), endless toxic war in the ME, support for coal and nuclear energy...these are disastrous polluting policies.
We need bold, aggressive, muscular leadership on this issue. Bernie Sanders says it every stump speech. Its a keystone of his beliefs. Ban fracking, the TPP, take massive revolutionary steps to cut CO2 emissions etc.
Hillary dooms humanity. I will have a clear conscience in 5 years as severe weather and environmental events snowball. You will own the coming disasters.
Madame President will go down as the worst president in history for her tepid incrementalism at a pivotal moment in our planet's history.
bettyellen

I read today SBS is promising coal miners they can keep their jobs? Should I believe that since I saw it here?
kaleckim
(651 posts)I could have actually went to her campaign site to see her bumper sticker, but you saved me time by just writing it here. Much appreciated. Now, I am sure that her massive support for fracking at the State Department had nothing to do with donations to her by an groups, cause she's Hillary. You know, there is this thing called renewable energy and we have a crumbling infrastructure. See any logical connections there? I could see a counter argument, like what the WTO is doing to countries trying to support their renewable energy companies, but I can't see a Clinton supporter making that claim unless they want to explain why her husband gifted the WTO to us.
kaleckim
(651 posts)So, logically then you vote against the candidate trying to actively move popular opinion and support the one going with the flow then. When we are approaching ecological collapse, which we are, the best idea is to just accept the situation and be "pragmatic" while the world goes to hell. What exactly do you and the Democratic Party stand for, if you can't find it in you to help us to avoid ecological collapse? It is almost like you want to prove that you are no longer a vehicle of progressive change, and that your task is to essentially manage our economic and ecological decline.
By the way, there is no need to brush off the idea that we are approaching ecological collapse. Take a look at the Stockholm Resilience Center's planetary boundaries, the recent IPCC reports, or reports on ocean acidification, the global species extinction rate, the ocean possibly being free of fish by mid-century, among many other things. You saying that doesn't equal, or far surpass, the Great Depression has nothing to do with objective reality.

SANDERS: Well, you don't phase...
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: -- that difference?
SANDERS: -- it all out tomorrow. And you certainly don't phase nuclear out tomorrow. But this is what you do do.
(APPLAUSE)
SANDERS: What you do do is say that we are going to have a massive program -- and I had introduced -- introduced legislation for 10 million solar rooftops. We can put probably millions of people to work retrofitting and weatherizing buildings all over this country.
(CHEERING)
SANDERS: Saving -- rebuilding our rail system.
(APPLAUSE)
SANDERS: Our mass transit system.
(APPLAUSE)
SANDERS: If we approach this, Errol, as if we were literally at a war -- you know, in 1941, under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, we moved within three years, within three more years to rebuild our economy to defeat Nazism and Japanese imperialism. That is exactly the kind of approach we need right now.

(651 posts)I have a background in economics, I know the data. Prove to me there has been economic progress since Reagan, hell, since Nixon, for most of the country. Prove our infrastructure has progressed. Prove that public schools have progressed. Prove that the environment is in better shape. Go ahead, the floor is yours. Things haven't gotten incrementally better just because Hillary Clinton and the corporations and banks backing her say they have.
"And I am geeing this is why people are so pissed Obama prevented a global depression with the bailout"
What individuals, groups, and institutions were bailed out? Local governments, especially ones dealing with de-industrialization? Massively indebted home owners, students? You know, private debt has exploded in recent decades and is much larger than public debt, grew at a much quicker rate than public debt leading into the crash. We have given over a year's worth of GDP to financial capital since the crash, the too big to fail banks are now bigger and pose and even greater systematic risk. The value of the debt instruments the rich and the banks own were maintained with tax payer money, as was the power of financial capital. Provide the evidence that anywhere close to that has gone towards the groups I mentioned. You can't.
Notice too that I am asking you over and over again for facts and proof. There is a reason for that.
"Start doing your part, and reap the benefits in 8-16 years."
I keep on hearing stuff about unicorns and rainbows. Classical case of projection. THIS is unicorns and rainbows. I am an activist, former union rep, been involved my entire adult life. That doesn't mean I view the Democratic Party as a vehicle of change. Now, if you or others can make the case and have facts to back it up, great. There is no evidence though that things have gotten better and that your party is that. Again, if you can argue otherwise, I am all ears.

I want us to confront them and demand an accounting of what was sent to her and the DNC even before the first vote.
I want them to understand that they took my vote away from me by giving her a head start in the campaign. I want the leadership of those 32 state parties to step down and allow us to vote in new leaders.
I want my democracy back. I also want to see the super-delegates ended in the Democratic Party - if not this year then for any further elections. Like the Hillary Victory Fund most of the SDs rushed to endorse Hillary with no consideration of what their own states wanted - in doing so they gave Hillary another head start way before even one vote was counted. This is not a democracy it is a balancing act with one candidate with their fingers on the scale.
So yes I am going to sign this petition. And I am going to do more.

(1,771 posts)It took me less than 1 minute to prove that this 'thing' that Mr. Weaver put out is total bullshit.
Just go to the FEC site. It lists all the state parties that the Hillary Victory Fund has paid out to.
I did notice that the Bernie Victory Fund has raised $1,000.
Ignoring the comic book fantasy put out by Jeff, it begs the question. Which candidate has done more to help The Democratic Party?
beedle
(1,235 posts)The money goes to the state parties all right .. just long enough to show up on the records and then are transferred right back to the DNC the next day.
Let me guess, you're looking at the $4.5 million that is claimed to have been transferred to the states .. the same $4.5 Million that was then transferred back (by Hillary people, many times without the knowledge of the state party officials) to the DNC and used for Hillary campaigning.
postatomic
(1,771 posts)The D.N.C., which can spend money on Mr. Obamas behalf with certain restrictions, announced Sunday it collected nearly $50 million in September and had $27.4 million in cash on hand at the end of the month.
The Hillary Victory Fund is modeled after the highly successful Obama Victory Fund. Both are/were designed to provide a 50 State funding strategy for the General Election. Since I have serious doubts that The Sandman is going to be the nominee I'm not sure why Comic Book Guy would be so upset with this.
I have a life so I don't have the time to look at every state contribution to see if money went in - then immediately went out. The few states I looked at didn't provide me with anything that would back your statement: transferred back (by Hillary people, many times without the knowledge of the state party officials) to the DNC and used for Hillary campaigning. Actually this seems silly. If the Hillary Campaign wanted some of this money for the General Election they could just take it (within certain limits).
The FEC is cool with it:

(651 posts)why would any progressive have a problem with this? It isn't as if your party has a history (especially in recent decades) of nominating presidential candidates that do the bidding of Wall Street, corporations and the rich (i.e., their top donors).
No one should take any of you seriously when you pretend to be against Citizens United.
