Sanders Statement on Indiana Primary Win
May 3, 2016
NEW ALBANY, Ind. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders issued the following statement on Tuesday after The Associated Press projected that he won the Indiana primary:
I want to thank the people of Indiana for the great upset victory that they gave us tonight. This is the 18th state that we have won, and we expect more victories in the weeks to come.
The Clinton campaign thinks this campaign is over. Theyre wrong. Maybe its over for the insiders and the party establishment, but the voters in Indiana had a different idea. The campaign wasnt over for them. It isnt over for the voters in West Virginia. It isnt over for Democrats in Oregon, New Jersey and Kentucky. It isnt over for voters in California and all the other states with contests still to come.
We understand that we have an uphill climb to victory but we have been fighting uphill from the first day of this campaign. We are in this campaign to win and were going to fight until the last vote is cast. There is nothing I would like more than to take on and defeat Donald Trump, someone who must never become president of this country.
The voters in the remaining contests deserve a chance to compare my record and Hillary Clintons record on creating jobs, raising the minimum wage, war and peace, the need for health care for all, breaking up big banks, combating climate change and other critical issues. To help voters make the best-informed choice possible, I hope that Secretary Clinton will agree to a date and place for a debate in California.

(20,453 posts)We already knew that, but it's nice to hear it from you.
Meanwhile, the number of Independents and Republicans who already see the Republican Party destroyed by Drumpf's certain nomination will be more inclined to vote for Bernie Sanders.

(4,119 posts)You can't determine the outcome based on polls today.
Trump will have SIX months to make stupid remarks. His stupidity will unite the Hillary and Bernie people.
Any Democrat who doesn't vote and risks getting Trump as president is an egotistical idiot.
Lets remember 2000. The people who voted for Nader. What we got was 8 years of Bush, a war in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of people killed and a tanked economy. With Trump it could be worse.

(4,119 posts)They will never vote for a democrat in the general.
Trump got as many votes as Bernie and Hillary combined. Cruz got more votes than either Bernie or Hillary.
Twice as many people voted republican.
Bernie gained SIX delegates.
This is not a game changer!

(870 posts)I got my very first call from the Sanders campaign tonight to make sure I got my ballot and filled it out and sent it in. All votes in Oregon are mail-in. No long lines, no harassment. It's like the government of Oregon actually want people to vote.
The idea, widely discussed on TV tonight, is that the campaign is over. Blah, blah blah.....
I'm delighted the Bernie believes it's not over because the people in Oregon and the other states want a chance to vote. No, we DEMAND the chance to vote.
BTW - I've seen a lot of campaigns come and go over the years. I can never remember any primary election, for President or for any other office, where the "guaranteed" winner has lost a subsequent primary election after their victory was "guaranteed". Never. We all know it's over when the folks that come in second run out of money, lose all their momentum, fade into the background, etc, etc. That is not happening.
I don't think it's over. Not yet.

(12,229 posts)is keeping it close enough- and it is beyond that with all the arguments stated above. Only if the GOP was to actually split would victory be guaranteed to any Dem. The assurance of beating a terrible candidate needs a modestly strong candidate and a united party. In an open election this is of course often hard to achieve right away.
Sanders is absolutely winning his first goal- to challenge the platform and beliefs of the party leadership. The major goal of the other side- surprisingly weak and often inept in asserting near 100% party machinery support for last time's runner up-
was too big. They wanted to tamp down and hush those issues and that whole voice of the people thing. They will be obdurate in giving the supers to Hillary. They will be obdurate and perhaps graceless in silencing the immense crowd of Bernie delegates swarming the convention. They will have to admit defeat of the Third Way or guarantee defeat in the fall. They will have to heal inside in the hall.
With this unprecedented percentage of delegates there in the hall they will be helpless to beat Sanders' main professed goal. They will very likely have to settle for a graceful Sanders concession at that same convention as their only path to party unity.
Though the political judgment many "pros" have shown so far has been incompetent, gutless, outdated, off point, curiously Republican lite, truculent, arrogant, bewildered, leaderless embarassing but if none of those a clear and present unnecessary danger to any thing on this planet I can think of that's worth saving. I don't really see or know IF the party power puffs will let the whole party come together for the people or if winning in November is their top priority for all races.
Also, it isn't over yet, this stubborn back and forth battle.

(24,010 posts)That's my call. Called it some time ago. Bernie Sanders is Seabiscuit. The improbable, come-from-behind, never-say-die, oblivious to ridicule from "the elite," dauntless, knock-kneed, squat underdog and greatest race horse who ever lived.
