Clinton Loss In West Virginia Signals Trouble In Rust Belt

May 11 U.S. Democratic White House candidate Hillary Clinton lost a nominating contest to Bernie Sanders in economically struggling West Virginia on Tuesday, a setback that could signal trouble for her in industrial states in the November general election.

The defeat slows Clinton's march to the nomination, but she is still heavily favored to become the Democratic candidate in the Nov. 8 election.

Still, her failure to win over voters deeply skeptical about the direction of the economy underscored the work she will need to do to court working-class voters in the Rust Belt, which includes key states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania. West Virginia has one of the highest unemployment rates in country.

Sanders, who has vowed to take his campaign all the way to the Democrats' July 25-28 convention in Philadelphia, said he is the stronger candidate to beat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump in November.

"Working people are hurting," Sanders said in Oregon Tuesday night after his West Virginia win. "We need an economy that works for all of us, not just the one percent."

WV is not "rust belt". WV is coal, coal ,and more coal. What is Bernie's position on coal? Evidently he has none because he said nothing about it when he had the chance.

Obama almost lost the 2012 Democratic primary to a felon in jail

That tells you all you need to know about West Virginia Democrats

If you can promise them black lung, you will win their unending loyalty. Hillary will not. Trump will.

For example, Clinton easily defeated Obama in the Pennsylvania and Ohio primaries (winning each by around 9 points). Did Obama's failure to win over voters mean he was destined to lose those states in the general? Obviously not, since he won both.

And does Sanders' victory in West Virginia mean he's destined to win that state if he's the nominee? Of course not. Indeed, it would be shocking if he did win it. After all, Trump got more votes than Sanders did and there was little incentive for repubs to bother to vote in a primary where only one candidate was still in the race.

We figured that one out here in Detroit in 1986 or so. All Drumpf will do is talk about how he hires and all that crapola from August to Nov. 8.

No one can retrain, or train the first time, with higher education as ridiculously expensive as it is, and locked in to bank financing.

Like the uh businesses in education, perhaps one day soon the health care businesses will be able to make debts unforgivable. Neoliberal Progress.

This is what happens when the party tries to force in a FAILURE of a candidate.

Blue collar people know she has no interest in them or their problems. Other groups need to catch on that she has no interest in them either. It's all about her own ambition to be the first woman president and nothing more.

Bernie is the opposite of ambitious. He gives away credit if it will get something good done for people. He is a genuine activist for improving our quality of life and leveling the playing field.

Good work West Virginia! and Bernie!

When ALL the people get to vote it's the same story: Bernie wins. And that's how the General Election will be -- ALL get to vote. It's something to think about.
