2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"Good Girl!" is what I say to my cat as I skritch her behind the ears.
It is not something I would ever say to any adult women, especially not a U. S. Senator or someone being considered for any high office. I would not say it to my wife, my 90-year-old mother or my 20-something second cousin.
It is dismissive thing to call any woman, IMO. I'm surprised that anyone would use such a term.
We are on the brink of nominating a woman to run for President. She is not a "girl." Women are not "girls" unless they choose to call themselves that among their friends. Women are not called "girls" by anyone not intimately known to them once they enter the adult world and take responsibility for their own lives.
Such an appellation is outrageous upon utterance.
That is my opinion as a 70 year old man. It is a firm opinion.

(13,869 posts)You could have simply replied here, like most other DUers felt was the appropriate way to deal with it http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=1943399

My two granddaughters, age 30 and 34, are and will always be "the girls" to grandma and myself. although we are fully conscious of the fact that they are professional women and mothers with families of their own and a full range of adult responsibilities.
On the plus side, I join the other poster in offering props for your use of the verb "to skritch". I suspect my cat wants a nice head skritch and thats why she's sitting by my chair looking sad as I type this.

(146,357 posts)Clearly, terms of endearment within families are an exception. I doubt that anyone on DU has such a relationship with a woman who is a U.S Senator though.

(15,558 posts)I know women who collectively call their friends "the girls". What about calling men boys? "Good old boys", "Boy's club"... Anyway, why would being called a girl be an insult? Are girls inferior?

(14,651 posts)I really love it when men try to explain shit like this. I suppose there are no "attaboys" or "attagirls" allowed in your vocabulary either, which I interpret "Good Girl" to be, although I personally have never heard anyone say, "attaman" or "attawoman" and have gratefully accepted "attagirls" when offered. Silly me for not scolding the person for not referring to me as a woman while they were singing my praises. For shame! Alas, I am a little too uppity to get offended by such nonsense. Go head and call me a girl. My friends and I do it with each other, after all. That would be my girlfriends. Doesn't that just flow off the tongue so much better than woman friends (or is it women friends?)? I am fully aware that I'm a woman. Funny how that works, huh?
I actually enjoyed your grammar and spelling lectures. Perhaps you should resume them instead of getting yourself into a tizzy (was that sexist?) over things like this. It's just silly (was that sexist too? I never know...).
