On third day of convention, Alaska Democrats call for end to super delegates
ANCHORAGE
The Alaska Democratic Convention wrapped up Sunday afternoon on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. Most of the day was dedicated to organizational matters, like electing party officers. They also approved a resolution demanding an end to the use of super delegates at the Democratic National Convention.
Super delegates can vote for whichever candidate they please at the DNC. Regular delegates are committed to proportionally represent Alaska Democrats choice for president. In July, a total of 20 delegates from Alaska will attend the DNC in Philadelphia. Sixteen of them are regular delegates, and four are super delegates. Of the 16 regular delegates, 13 are committed to Bernie Sanders; the remaining three are pledged to Hillary Clinton.
This year especially, weve seen a lot of concern about super delegates and the weight theyre given in the party. And some people would really like the delegation to reflect the will and the vote of the people, said Jake Hamburg, the communications director for the Alaska Democratic Party.
Democrats said turnout at this years convention was the largest ever.
