2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Shaming Campaign has kicked into full gear.
"How dare you oppose Sec. Clinton and her faction of the Democratic Party! You have no right to do that! Bernie has become a sad nasty egomaniac and a con man. His followers are thugs. They should slink away while they still can......For the sake of the Children"
That seems to be the message emanating from the Clinton Camp and the Mainsteam media enablers.
It's been there all along, but now it has broken out with new fervor because......Well, Bernie is more durable than they anticipated. And his supporters are more committed -- and numerous -- than anticipated.
So bring out the shame machine. A meeting gets overheated, as they sometimes do? The Sanders People are all Violent Bullies! A few bad apples make bad phone calls. Those Bernie Bros are all Crazy Stalkers!
Sounds a lot like the reaction to critics of Bush in the runup to the Iraq War.
Yes let's all just give up don't challenge the way things are.
Different day, same memes.

Suddenly they aren't lying whenthey're backing Bernie
They are trying to play Bernie's supporters like fiddles.
How can so many not not see this?
Morning Joke, really?

Unfortunately, those people are Sander's fanatical, math averse supporters who are so caught up in themselves and their "revolution" they still haven't figured out that they are late to the game and that revolutions only serve to hurt the underdogs and solidify the hatred of opposing positions.
The evolution started long ago. Throughout history we've gain progress through civil discourse and compromise, not through demands and digging in heels.

(1,473 posts)1 They give Bernie credit for one bill he didn't write and many other "worked with Kirsten Gillibrand" . Its an attempt to add another item and enhance the list.
2 Then they take this amendment and brag on Sanders ..
H.Amdt. 238 107th Congress (2001-2002)
Amendment prohibits the importation of goods on which the United States Customs Service has issued a detention order on the basis that such goods were made by forced or indentured child labor.
Purpose:
An amendment to prohibit use of funds in the bill for the Customs Service to allow for release into the U.S. of any goods or merchandise produced by indentured child labor.
House Amendment Code:
And yet all of Sanders supporters are dead set against the entire TPP, which has includes protecting workers and preventing child labor practices. Hmmmm.
Then there's this:
In 24 years Bernie he has managed to get a whopping 3 pieces of legislation that he sponsored through Congress and enacted into law. 2 Renamed United States Post Offices. The third was a bill relating to veterans.
In only 6 years Hillary Clinton got 20 bills through Congress and formed bipartisan support to do it.
This is getting things done.

(30,481 posts)Sanders himself has done it by painting anyone not voting for him as an establishment lackey.
Both campaigns have done it, one is much better at it.
Armstead
(47,803 posts)All of this pissing and moaning to demonize millions of people by the bad actions of a few is not just honest political campaigning. It goes much deeper.
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)That includes the supporters of candidates. Read about Lincolns first election some time. He regularly defined his opponents supporters. When I tell you it has been a part of campaigning for a long time, I'm talking since the first election and every single one since. Not as you are describing. This is mild to some of what has happened in the past.
apnu
(8,760 posts)Clinton has called Sanders unrealistic, many times. Also wrong on the issues. But "pissing and moaning to demonize millions of people"? Haven't seen that from Hillary Clinton.
I've seen the media do that, yes. I've seen people on DU do that, sure. But Hillary and her campaign sweeping all Sanders voters under the bus because of Nevada? Haven't see it.
If you have please enlighten me with sources and context.

(131,412 posts)but alienating a potential group of supporters now doesn't make sense to me. It did take a while for people to recognize the extent of damage Bill's programs would do/have done, to many. That was/is a shame.

(28,824 posts)(I'm supporting Bernie until it is literally mathematically impossible for him to win; then i'm voting for the democrat; full disclosure)
for example, watching TYT yesterday, Ana says oh no i will never vote for hillary - how can anyone, in good conscience, ever vote for her? assuming the moral high ground, of course she's voting in CA where the democrat pretty much always wins anyway.
that's not true for us all.
we are rolling along inexorably toward what i consider to be the media's self-fulfilling prophecy. corporate media has given short shrift to Bernie since the get, AND "covered" trump into the republican nomination. i am sickened by the turn of events. and what can i do? well, i can vote. that's pretty much it.
after the election is decided, i'll be signing up for the new, viable, leftist party. until then, well i cannot stay home and i must, must do whatever i can to keep the republican out of the white house. my conscience is clear on this point. to me, it's about the country. most Bernie purists admit that trump would be far worse than hillary. if for no other reason at all than the supreme court opening(s) to be decided by the next president! even if that was the only fucking reason...
whatever. the discourse has grown so rancorous. the hillary camp lies and lies and lies. no respect at all for the millions of people supporting Bernie! i swear to gawd they are their own worst enemy, painting people who should be their allies into a corner where many people are now swearing i will never vote for hillary. what a dangerous, disgusting, and STUPID way to be.
i woke up in the middle of the night, checked in on DU...and just starting putting every single poster who wrote something ugly on ignore. i've trashed more threads in this campaign...countless. i want to stop looking entirely it makes me so sad. and it scares me because any republican, let alone trump, to my mind will beyond any doubt fuck this country up even more than it already is. and let's get real, it's pretty fucked up, almost all the way around.

97 percent of Sanders supporters would agree with that statement.

(3,687 posts)Death threats are investigated by the FBI. If you know who made the threats for sure call the FBI and let them know.
Let's hang in there and see who actually made those calls.
COuld have been:
Trump PEople
Brock People
Camp Weather Vane people
Clinton PAC's
Bernie People (Fringe maybe)
I realize swiftboating Bernie is in vogue with right wingers at the moment - but Hillarians should refrain from sticking their footsies in their mouths just yet.

(47,803 posts)They are individuals who were not sitting in a phone bank making calls.
There some mentally ill, desperate people who support Clinton too.
There are "regular" people whose emotions are extremely invested in her, and might get riled up and do something like send obnoxious text messages if provoked.
Are you going to say that is typical of her supporters? That Clinton is personally responsible for their behavior?

(47,803 posts)Looking over it again, I understand the reason for your post more clearly.
I won't deny that the ones contacted were Sanders supporters. But I will stand by the basic point I was making that the actions of some hotheads -- or extremely stressed out or mentally disturbed individuals -- should not be used to characterize the millions of people who support Sanders.

You can't pin the actions of one or more crackpots alleged to be Sanders supporters on Bernie's campaign unless you're willing to put the blame for the assault by a Clinton supporter on a Sanders supporter straight onto Hillary's campaign.
