2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWe need to have the largest peaceful gathering in US history in Philadelphia
This is the future of our country, nothing is more important than being in Philadelphia this summer. Find a way out of work or school, get someone to baby sit, organize car pools.
This is a turning point in history. Do we want to have lobbyists and bought party members decide the future of this country? Or do we show them what the people actually want? We can not afford to have 4 (or more) years of corruption, criminal behavior, foreign intervention, and likely warfare. We can't afford not to take a REAL stand on climate change, to have people enter bankruptcy due to our outrageous healthcare system, or to have by far the largest prison system in the world. We can't afford to have the choice be between the democrats unlikeable pet, who is under FBI investigation.
We need to show the party elites that this is our country, and we won't stand by while they manipulate the media, elections, and our lives. Now is the time.
Let's top the 2004 Red Sox World Series victory parade of ~3 million people. I think we deserve to have our largest peaceful gathering be something more significant, like it is for other countries around the world.

(9,086 posts)I don't understand how gathering in large groups has any effect on elections or government.
If gathering in huge numbers did anything real then Bernie Sanders would have won the nomination. I think a lot of Bernie people are focused too much on rallies and "protests" instead organizing in more effective ways like organizing for elections or other types of community organizing.

(1,213 posts)Now they are protesting the DNC and the fake convention.
The main reason I posted this was to show that redditors are preparing to be peaceful...
while also recognizing that there will be planted violent instigators and are preparing to deal with them as well.

(154,021 posts)And true change will come via the streets. It always has and it will continue. The ballot box is the least effective tool actually. Oh and it takes at times a generation or two

(39,215 posts)daughters to push us in wheelchairs to some of the events planned. I would go if I could. But keep it peaceful if we really want to influence them.
Anything else just gives them ammunition against us.

(1,128 posts)When only a few thousand show up to rally for Sanders, it will be clear to the world why he lost the primaries

(744 posts)And reading the responses on that link you posted, these people sound anything but peaceful. I fear for the safety of the participants in the convention if that link is any indication.

(744 posts)The following quotes from the link you posted should be of grave concern to any reasonable person. I hope that the DNC is reading these commentaries and preparing themselves accordingly:
"Block every street surrounding the convention center."
"I'm not driving all the way down to Philly to be non-disruptive."
"We should also block entry to all the large bank buildings and corporate headquarters."
"I feel like block the building, no entry, no convention."
"We are protesting outside that convention whether it's a free speech zone or not"
"We need to have the largest loud, obnoxious, civilly disobedient, non-violent, but NOT PEACEFUL protest ever. We must be loud, we must be angry, we must not let them say "haha those hippies". We must block entryways, lock arms and surround the building, have demands and not just chant and smile. We tried just chanting and being positive. They refused to even cover it in the media and still called us violent."
"Violence without a purpose should be discouraged; however, violence with a purpose can be very useful."
