WATCH Secret Service Rushes Stage at Bernie Sanders Rally
Five animal rights protesters jumped over barricades and rushed the podium at a Bernie Sanders rally in East Oakland, California, on Monday night, prompting the Vermont senator's Secret Service detail to intervene.
One of the protesters appeared to be hit by one of the security member's baton, while another was carried out of the venue by his arms and legs.
................
Zach Groff of the grassroots group Direct Action Everywhere told ABC News that they have been targeting Sanders because of his message about caring for the most vulnerable.
His campaign has promoted itself based on this idea of progressivism and rejecting discrimination and inequality," Groff said, "but when it comes to the animals in the United States and around the world, discrimination and violence is the name of the game every single day.
He claims to be a progressive, but you cannot be a progressive if you oppose animal rights," he said.

(34,648 posts)Glad he has security, and hope the protesters are not banged up too bad. I think that the jumping over of the barricades made people think they had bad intentions. So much drama going on this cycle.

(58,785 posts)Gee, where have we heard that kind of line before >1000 times? And the dishonest villification of Bernie as merely claiming to be a progressive and as someone who "opposes animal rights." I think those extremists have trumped our extremists.
Bernie may have been irritated, but I'm guessing he respects these fellow far lefters far more than he does liberals who would just legislate laws arrived at by consensus for more humane "animal agriculture." And, btw, we really need further steps

(50,334 posts)I, personally, wouldn't hunt, but I know it's necessary to keep the populations of some animals under control. I'm 100% opposed to African big game hunting and trophy hunting in general. I think an annual deer hunt or bear hunt or other sanctioned hunt for a specific number of days or with only a specific number of permits issued is okay.

(1,000 posts)The term is dismissive and pompous. My opinions are based on valid issues and concerns. I do not refers to those who don't agree with me, or don't care about the subject, extreme.
Respect for others and other opinions is progressive and tolerant.

(22,651 posts)About Peta, I'm really grateful to them for exposure done over the decades to help animals have a better 'life', though I'm not a member.
Here are just a couple of Petas accomplishments I am grateful for there are many more. It's a lot of work to get animal abuse convictions in America. Corps protect their industries and many in our own elected Government protect those animal abusers.
Undercover investigations of pig-breeding factory farms in North Carolina and Oklahoma revealed horrific conditions and daily abuse of pigs, including the fact that one pig was skinned alive, leading to the first-ever felony indictments of farm workers. See other victories for animals on factory farms.
PETAs undercover investigation of a Florida exotic-animal training school, which revealed that big cats were being beaten with ax handles, encouraged the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop new regulations governing animal-training methods. See other victories for animals who are used for entertainment.
PETA persuaded Mobil, Texaco, Pennzoil, Shell, and other oil companies to cover their exhaust stacks after showing how millions of birds and bats had become trapped in the shafts and been burned to death.
A California furrier was charged with cruelty to animals after a PETA investigator filmed him electrocuting chinchillas by clipping wires to the animals genitals, which caused the animals to experience the pain of a heart attack while they were still conscious. In another undercover exposé, PETA caught a fur rancher on videotape causing minks to die in agony by injecting them with weedkiller. Both farms agreed to stop these cruel killing methods. See other victories for animals who are killed for their skins.
After two years of negotiations withand more than 400 demonstrations againstthe company worldwide, McDonalds became the first fast-food chain to agree to make basic welfare improvements for farmed animals. Burger King and Wendys followed suit within a years time, and within two years, Safeway, Kroger, and Albertsons had also agreed to adopt stricter guidelines in order to improve the lives of billions of animals who are slaughtered for food.
Thanks to PETAs lengthy campaign to push PETCO to take more responsibility for the animals in its stores, the company agreed to stop selling large birds and to make provisions for the millions of rats and mice in its care

(22,651 posts)I know what you mean about some PETA 'members' being totally vegan and against even Pet ownership. I understand but I love pets
I've participated in rescues of large groups of horribly abused animals. With some animals euthanasia is an immediate kindness.
Did you read somewhere this Ghoff person (the man who rushed at Sanders) was a member of Peta? or do you lump all "animal rights" persons under PETAS name?

(30,481 posts)It is why you find BLM protesting democrats, overall. Very smart move and has had a major impact on our primaries.
Sanders and Clinton would be the correct two for these individuals to protest.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)but rather to pull Sanders in their direction. Sanders opponent Hillary Clinton recently released a campaign platform on animal issues, although it stops far short of what activists would like to see. Activists expect Bernie Sanders, the progressive candidate, to support more radical action to provide animals not just with improved conditions but with legal rights to be free from harm.

(1,788 posts)It's just, doing something like that, they my not want to do harm, but anyone on the receiving end have no idea what's happening. I know if it was me, I'd be angry...only because how do I know what the hell is going on and would they want to do real harm to me. I will admit...I'm a bit of a wimp

It is really hard to take.

(22,651 posts)Even medical professionals today inform people to eat less meat, smaller portions.
The industries, the Corps for beef, pork and chicken have for decades, hidden their factory farms and even recently made it a crime in some states to expose animal abuse.
Times are changing for the better in many countries, even the USA. Although all 'change' in America is at a snails pace because we drag everything through the courts and it's usually Republicans who prefer profits over any better conditions for animals.
What's really bad are countries with no humane laws at all for "Pets" or livestock. Countries like China where their factory farms can have a million! chickens, dog/cat fur is used as fringe trim on jackets for export and angora fur for expensive sweaters is 'hand pulled', farmed for sweaters from screaming rabbits.
I think the internet is a blessing and a curse, much more of a blessing because it can be used to expose animal cruelty. Exposure and education and an Army of thousands, millions of online "animal rights" people are a blessing.
It is 'hard to take', I agree but many times it's not 'hate', they're not bad people just misinformed or not as involved.
