I was traveling through Kentucky, on my way to take some blacksmithing courses in North Carolina, when we stopped in Beria.
You really don't realize how other people live until you rub elbows with them. We walked into art shop after art shop, none of which actually had any art. The last one was hideous. The place was filled with people. Five folks sat facing one another. Each held an instrument of torture, ie a banjo, guitar, bass, and washboard.
Then they began to make noise. As CS Lewis called it, That Hideous Sound. Each sang in their own key, at their own pace, and with their own words. It was painful.

(8,541 posts)But I can respect the art or at least try too I just see Dolly as something different entirely.

(28,017 posts)He would come up with the most creative jokes about my taste in music, and I would return the favor about his. It was a hard fought contest, all in good humor. Working a porcupine's spines into one of his jokes was a masterpiece.
He was a really neat guy (except for his musical taste). He got an engineering degree and worked on off shore drilling sites. Unfortunately, a blast took his life on a Gulf of Mexico experimental rig. He was way too young to die.

And, she shattered a few glass ceilings of her own by achieving success on her own terms.

(135,425 posts)It's astounding how many well known songs came out of her head! I am not a super fan of country music, but I like what she writes.
And, if she's putting on an act when she goes on those interview shows, she's a helluvan actor, too--because she comes across as someone I'd love to know. She seems very kind.

(135,425 posts)a dashing Burt Reynolds! She was very good in that film, as I remember, too! It's sometimes hard to hold your own in a farce, but she did a great job.
And I could live like royalty on the residuals from this song, alone:
She has had quite a remarkable career.

(41,832 posts)I see the snide remarks and the effete snobbery of some. This is the attitude of a section of so-called liberals that turns off voters...
the very voters that should come to the Democratic party.

(22,075 posts)They get all up in arms when a "Hollywood Liberal" makes a statement they don't agree with and they deride them as not being qualified to have and voice their opinion. Yet they are the ones who elect actors: Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Clint Eastwood for example. If the Dixie Chicks make a political statement, they try to destroy their careers but they put Ted Nugent front and center.
Republican hypocrisy knows no bounds.

She is a remarkable woman, regardless of one's taste in music I am appalled at how many people on this thread seem unaware of how much of a great role model she is. She's been an LGBT ally for forever and a half, and supported all sorts of important issues for poor people and other disadvantaged folks.
I am not the type to get all up in arms about celebrities and their political/social work because so much of it is lip service, opportunism, or self-serving in some way. Nor do I tend to let shit on DU get me worked up. But Dolly is the real deal and the apparent snobbery on this thread is practically pissing me off.
I'm actually surprised at myself and my strong desire to defend her on this thread, LOL!
