it looks like sometimes mid July, mid august, to late Aug
as some other post pointed not wanting compete with Olympics or other events, I guess

They occur August 5-21, and I suppose it's harder to get people to tune in to conventions when the good events are on in prime time.

something about the party not in the white house wanting extra 'official' (as it were) time to campaign. Get going early and get a leg up.

Since the presidency is open this year, both are not in the white house.

This was way back in the '60s i heard this, probably meaningless now.
