For those who worried Clinton would tack back to center on criminal justice/policing issues, this AME speech seems evidence she won't

I love seeing the elders pray over @HillaryClinton - her faith is personal not political.... #ImWithHer

Heard on Weekend Edition Saturday
The AME Church is holding its convention this week in Philadelphia. Members react to the deaths of five police officers, after a spate of police-related violence rocked Minneapolis and Baton Rouge.
LYNN NEARY, HOST:
Both of the presumptive nominees canceled campaign events yesterday because of the sniper attack on police in Dallas. But Hillary Clinton did keep one event on her schedule. She spoke to a gathering of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, where NPR's Jeff Brady reports the audience was primed to hear a candidate talk about race in America.
JEFF BRADY, BYLINE: The AME church was founded by a former slave here in Philadelphia 200 years ago. It now has about two and a half million members around the world. The church holds its quadrennial convention during election years, and candidates - usually Democrats these days - come to make a speech. Before Clinton walked on stage, AME Senior Bishop John Bryant told the crowd he wants a presidential candidate who offers substance.
(SOUNDBITE OF CAMPAIGN EVENT)
JOHN BRYANT: We need more than encouraging words.
UNIDENTIFIED PEOPLE: Yeah.
(APPLAUSE)
BRYANT: We need to leave believing we have found the person that will fight for liberty and justice for all.
(APPLAUSE)
BRADY: The shootings this week in Baton Rouge, outside St. Paul, Minn., and in Dallas - they were on a lot of minds at this convention. When Clinton took the stage, she talked about each incident and mentioned the names of those killed. She told the crowd that after the 24-hour news cycle has moved on from this issue, she won't. Clinton talked about working for a better gun safety legislation and more training for police officers.
HILLARY CLINTON: And I'm going to keep talking about these issues with every audience. And if I'm elected, I'll start working on this on day one and keep at it every single day after that.
BRADY: Clinton also said white Americans need to do a better job of listening when black Americans talk about their experience of living in this country - a point that drew a round of applause at this convention. Outside the hall where Clinton spoke, you could hear people talking about the shootings this week.......................

(6,409 posts)I wonder how well the AME churches reflect the concerns of Black Lives Matter. There's a significant generation gap there.

(4,510 posts)short of a revolution is economic empowerment and political bribery like these other groups do. That's how the system works. We need to get our money up and pay off these politicians and control our media image to change things like the gays did. Marches and protests don't do shit. Prayer and hope isn't a real strategy.

I need to see evidence of that. The suggestion itself is offensive.

(14,040 posts)However, what the LGBTQ community did was create a lobbyist non-profit organization called The Human Rights Campaign and that group spent 25 years working on getting our community viewed in a more positive light and, like the NRA, gave rating to politicians who were LGTBQ friendly. We didn't "pay off" politicians--we threw our financial and verbal support behind politicians that supported us.
This is how we won some of our rights but don't believe we have won them all.

Empty gesture? Hah.
Those photos just got Hillary more votes.
And I'm betting many of those "elders" were involved in protests themselves earlier in their lives and know the younger generation needs support from their families and friends.
You see, racial injustice has been going on for many generations here and even we elders understand the nature of long-term struggle.

(4,510 posts)The problem is that the civil rights generation hasn't passed the baton and have stayed in power too long. They're too comfortable and democrats are too comfortable because they take us for granted. Look at the CBC they do little for the rest of us and are mainly there to have black faces in high places to pacify the rest of us.

(18,124 posts)"to lose our shit" because a bunch of black guys are laying on hands to a Democratic Party nominee? I don't undderstand your response. The RW church has always prayed for their candidates in this country and since I've been here I've found no cases of which you speak.
Clarify please...

(32,886 posts)If it was a bunch of white, or black, or whatever group you can think of laying hands and praying about the classrooms full of elementary school kids killed in Newtown do you think most DUers would object and criticize? I don't think so. This is similar.
