CLEVELAND, Ohio A march headlined by the Rev. Al Sharpton scheduled for the eve of the Republican National Convention has been canceled.
The event's sponsor, The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the Los Angeles-based international organization that provides HIV/AIDS medical care and advocacy, said it has decided to cancel the march in light of Thursday's shooting deaths of five Dallas police officers who were monitoring demonstrations in that city. The group still plans to hold a free program and concert featuring the band, The Roots and other musicians, celebrities and speakers inside the Wolstein Center on Cleveland State University's campus. The event is dubbed, "Keep the Promise."
"In the current uncertain environment nationwide, we are concerned for police officers who would be charged with protecting our marchers and advocates as well as for the safety and wellbeing of our march participants," Michael Weinstein, president of the foundation, said in a statement. "In an abundance of caution, we have therefore decided to remain on campus and not march."
"We feel strongly that remaining on campus at The Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University allows us to share our 'Keep the Promise' message loudly and clearly without increased risk for police and all participants in the event."

(22 posts)It is sad to realize instead of people seeing both sides..... A lot of people pick a side. I was really looking forward to this event but I guess what has to be done to keep everybody safe is the most important decision to make. Especially since you as well as I know there will be idiots there with their guns. Making a delicate circumstance perhaps combustible. SMH.
