(10,857 posts)One of the things I find highly encouraging is how we have a sudden and increasingly decent chance to sweep the table. Republican nastiness is working hard against them right now. A few examples:
* Republican money is trickling uphill at the exact same time that Congressional gerrymandering is showing weakness. Many House races that weren't competitive at all in 2014 are suddenly showing opportunity, and Democratic candidates are swooping in on it.
* The Republican Senate's refusal to hold hearings on the President's supreme court nominee permits President Obama to actively run against nearly two dozen Republican Senators, at the exact time that they are all experiencing statewide weaknesses. Normally in this kind of race the incumbent President is at a low level of popularity and effectiveness. Not the Big O.
* Donald Trump is proving to be a highly divisive force within the Republican Party and a highly unifying force among Democrats and independents. Even better, he's scamming the greater GOP for money that would be better spent on downticket races.
* Republican efforts to tank the economy this year have failed. Whatever President Obama said to the Saudis made them shut right the hell up and continue overproducing oil. Republican inability to complete a single appropriations bill means that President Obama's 2012 budget continues to be approved by continuing resolution, steadily adding jobs to the economy.
All these factors are aligning like stars in the sky, presaging a potentially glorious victory and the first genuine chance to put Republicans far enough out into the wings that we can actually fix things, instead of trying to stabilize. I wish we could take full credit for it, but we owe at least as much to the hateful incompetence of the Republicans, damn them to hell.

(35,619 posts)...are the only two Republican politicians viewed favorably by a majority of Americans (based on Gallup polling over past ten years.). Neither will be at the convention.
Jeb Bush wrote he won't vote for Trump. So did former Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN). John Kasich says he hasn't decided if he'll vote for Trump but he won't be at the convention.

(47,209 posts)Out playing cards only reinforces my thoughts on this. I don't think all the references to sci fi, Orwell and Lord of the Rings helped their outreach much. But THEY still smugly enjoy thinking we're in the middle of the end times. It's embarrassing to see some liberals insist on doing the chicken little dance. Playing the fear card like good little authoritarians.
