2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumForgive me, but I gotta say it. Told ya so....Bernie's Got This
All the bashing, wailing and gnashing of teeth over Bernie's slow walk towards an endorsement. All of the insults and marginalizing of Bernie. His ego. He's become irrelevant. etc. etc. etc.
Well, Clinton could not have asked for a MORE PERFECT ENDORSEMENT SPEECH.
Bernie is throwing his support to her -- and doing it in a very Bernie way. Sticking to his message and issues, saying the Revolution Will Continue....Not giving in or giving up on the issues. Making it clear there will be debate and disagreement.
BUT also fusing it with support for Clinton in a positive way. An Honest endorsement, much more Powerful than if he had just given up earlier.
By holding out, he got some of what he -- and his supporters ---want.
Yeah, he is not going to win over those who are adamantly opposed to Clinton. But he will bring over a lot of his supporters AND help re-energize the Democratic Party in the long run.
What some of us have been saying all along has come true. "Chill Out. Bernie's Got This."

(14,180 posts)I always fully expected this day. The whining and insults were for not.
Bernie played the long game and it paid off. Not for him, but for the 46% of Democrats that believed in his more progressive stances. Those of us that said we CAN push progressive positions and not be frightened and cowed by the rise of the fascist extremism on the other side into shrinking back into the wallpaper.

Clinton will benefit. She always seems preoccupied and anxious to me but today was genuinely happy. It was good to se.

Just by running an effective campaign and focusing on important issues, Bernie has registered a great win.

Before and after that vote - the Democratic Party had much to answer for ... Their behavior has been disgusting and unworthy of the support of America's working families ...
She gets one vote, while the weight of a whole new generation of young voters, watching carefully, listening intently, and unwilling to allow their support to be used to cash billionaire bills .... That scrutiny will be constant, and, there will be hell to pay if we get screwed yet again from the very party we cleave to ...

turbinetree
(24,745 posts)for to long this party has gone off the beaten path to do what exactly----------------this is a different ball game now, and the roots of this party were for the working people and the poor.
A prime example of this is when the Federal Minimum wage was introduced in the FDR Administration.
Francis Perkins then Labor Secretary wanted 40 cents for the living wage, and FDR wanted 30 cents, the compromise was 25 cents.
It was still short of the goal, she knew and he knew that health care and other benefits costs were going up and when there was No minimum wage, it was a dog eat dog world out there, they said this country cannot go on living like this.
And now the republicans under Eddie Munster and McTurtle think that everyone except the rich and powerful need to be "means tested" to get anything
We are the one country that requires a "means test" on everything, health care, wages, you name it there is a "means test" and this is "means test" is driving this country further down the line when it comes to rankings, the only number one ranking this country has is a having the capability to wipe everyone out and other life forms on this planet , and there is a test for that.
The new American Prospect magazine relates the information I have said and it basically says what this party needs to do

I'm so proud of how Bernie has conducted his campaign with utter integrity,
from top to bottom, holding true to his genuinely progressive positions. It has
dramatically moved our nation's and our Party's entire political conversation and
consciousness towards unapologetically reclaiming our Party's FDR/JFK roots.
No small feat. Congratulations Bernie on a job well done.

(10,345 posts)Not Hillary.
Hillary is hard to like for me. And I do have trust issues. But I won't let that feeling get in the way of me taking Trump down.
I won't allow a nation of emboldened bigots to get their way because I'm upset with Hillary.
If Hillary has to win for us progressives to continue to have a voice then so be it. Trump would shut us down permanently and that's not progress.

(4,311 posts)I didn't trust Obama and I was heartbroken after the primary. I said I would vote for him all along, and I did, but I wasn't expecting much. Someone here on DU said, "Give him a chance, he might surprise you." and you know what? He did surprise me. I voted for him enthusiastically in 2012. I like him a lot now. I think he's been a great president and I'll miss him and his family.
At the time, I really wasn't in the mood to hear that person say that on DU, and I'm sure you're not either, but, you know, give her a chance, she might surprise you?
Thank you for thinking of the good of the country and especially POC and the disadvantaged who would be so terribly hurt by Trump.

(963 posts)that Bernie would never endorse Hillary. I laughed and told him that when Bernie does eventually endorse Hillary, he doesn't have to pay me the money but I get to rub it in his face just the same. I called him first thing today and he didn't answer. Not only do I not get my 20 bucks, but now I don't get to rub it in his face because he is screening my calls.

That being said, the party needs a lot of work. The influence of money is huge. And there is a serious shortage of candidates with intelligence and vision and who are capable of serious ethical reasoning.
Armstead
(47,803 posts)"intelligence and vision and who are capable of serious ethical reasoning."
One of the reasons I've been a long time supporter of his (since the 90's) and will continue to be.
While he differs from Obama in certain ways, and doesn't agree with him on everything, Bernie is similar in that he thinks in terms of 3 D strategy.

(16,203 posts)It's so hard for some to understand how standing on principle operates.
And while the changes in the party platform mean nothing in comparison to the presidency, I really appreciate that Bernie stuck to his principles on that, too, and that Hillary Clinton went along with it. It's a line drawn in the sand. It will be stepped over, muddied and crossed throughout her presidency, sometimes without a choice and sometimes by choice, but it's a line and it's been drawn and it at least sets (on paper) some goalposts where they belong. Defense of those goalposts depends on the Bernie/Warren grassroots keeping active and building a movement that pushes congress in that direction.
On edit: to be clear, by "weathervanes" I am talking about Nicole Wallace and Chuck Todd etc... People who pay more attention to the emotional flow or appearances of politics than to issues or real values.
