It means that their minds are open to other opinions. A person on the left who is an ideologue and un-moving in their beliefs is no different then an ideologue on the right.

He answered all the questions, said he was for LBJ, and then he was asked how old he was. He told the pollster the truth: he was 15.

So the pollster ended the call, and DQed his responses.

Kennedy got many southern states in spite of the general animosity towards a Boston Catholic, because of Johnson.

Carter and Clinton also had southern strategies

It's true, no non-southern Democrat won the White House from JFK to Obama.

But the term 'southern strategy' has a specific meaning, regarding appealing to southern whites resentful over civil rights.

It was created by Kevin Phillips for the 1968 Nixon campaign he was a strategist on.

And followed by 'dog whistle' Republican appeals to racism after that campaign.

There are people who have a family history of allegiance to the Republican party. It is in their roots. Despite the influence of that history when they are young, they break away and switch to voting for Democrats. Hillary did. Many other people have. This ad is speaking to and supportive of those who now have an opportunity to do that by voting for Hillary.

The ad is perfect for its target audience.

This is so fucking good. Clinton is open about her work on the Goldwater campaign. That she switched, like this guy did (then and now) is actually interweaving decades of history together. This is actually extremely good for the history books. Consider the narrative. It's absolutely brilliant.

This is some Joseph Campbell level stuff here.

I think this ad only ran once on TV.......but it got the message across.

But I think the real reason LBJ won was that the country felt that an assassin shouldn't be able to change the direction of the country.

Invoking the "constructive criticism" clause here, since this is sure to be alerted on.

Hillary was a Goldwater Girl. That original ad didn't work on her. Now she is bringing that back into the conversation.

Brilliant?

I think it is a terrible ad. Anyone who "gets it" will also see the terrible ironies. And anyone who doesn't get it will simply ignore it. Given the complexity of reconstructing it, I have a hard time believing that the media will bother.

But not because it doesn't open attacks on Hillary.

The line in the original about how party unity is a lie if you don't really believe in the candidate doesn't help her.

She's made no secret that she was a "Young Republican" and all that as a teenager not old enough to vote. She idolized her father, who was a staunch Republican, so why would that surprise anyone that she did that as a kid?
