(22,759 posts)In the 1980s the proportion of the eligible poor who received federal housing subsidies declined. In 1970 there were 300,000 more low-cost rental units (6.5 million) than low-income renter households (6.2 million). By 1985 the number of low-cost units had fallen to 5.6 million, and the number of low-income renter households had grown to 8.9 million, a disparity of 3.3 million units.
Another of Reagans enduring legacies is the steep increase in the number of homeless people, which by the late 1980s had swollen to 600,000 on any given night and 1.2 million over the course of a year. Many were Vietnam veterans, children and laid-off workers.

(5,739 posts)all over the U.S. in a panic, trying to nail down republican senate seats in the wake of iran contra and his administrations many other scandals. The polls showed that his senate was in deep trouble. As hard as reagan worked to help, (and as infallible as many republicans thought of him in those days) Ronnie couldn't get the base out to vote for these candidates. All the candidates he campaigned for, lost.

Saint Ronnie was a national embarrassment.

Then, to add insult to injury, the Pukes name the capital airport after him - rubbing salt in an open wound.

(31,135 posts)depression, recession, whatever, since 1932. There were NO jobs. Lots of employers had hiring freezes on,
long-time workers were laid off or hours were cut, etc.
For me personally, the 80's got better in 1983 and later on. But I am no fan of Saint Ronnie.

In Reagan's last address, he quoted his favorite literary work--John Winthrop's A Model of Christian Charity.
It was really writtenas a control mechanism to prevent the poor from overthrowing the rich, but when Reagan quoted it, he added the word "shining" to it, which was never in there. To this day, stupid people in the GOP continue to misquote this.

(68,825 posts)But he is dead and gone...this election and those to come should be about the future. Living in the past is a waste of time. We have our own problems to solve...many who supported Reagan are dead and gone too.

(12,839 posts)I heard an interview on the radio this week with former OK Gov Frank Keating, who said that before Pence, Trump was considering Kasich. Keating said Trump Jr. had even called Kasich to feel him out, adding that he would be the "most powerful Vice President in history" -- or in other words, as VP, Kasich would be given a lot of things to do that are normally reserved for the President! (At this point, the radio hosts chuckled in amazement, saying Trump's VP "wouldn't just be another Joe Biden." But I digress...) Keating didn't know if such an offer had been made to Pence. But what this says to me is, Trump's people already know that Trump is monumentally unsuited for the job of President, and would need, nay, REQUIRE, people with actual governing experience to do his job for him!! And so he'd get surrounded by a bunch of rightwing types with horrid records and then turn all his duties and decisions over to them.
Remember when Republicans trotted out the same idea regarding Bush Jr.? "He doesn't need to be smart," they claimed. "He just needs to surround himself with a good team." THAT worked out SO well...
Even if I were a conservative, I wouldn't want the guy I actually voted for to abdicate all his responsibilities to other people.

(1,730 posts)Republican party, too. He kissed their ass in his successful effort to beat George H.W. Bush for the nomination. Even Barry Goldwater foresaw what the religious zealots would do to the party - and he warned about it back in 1964. But Reagan not only used them to win his election; he ushered them onto the national political stage and held the spotlight for them. The likes of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson helped poison American politics and discourse for generations to come.

That said, the damage is done. Now, we have to get active and do something about it, and job one is reigning in conservatives.

(206,861 posts)President Carter's choice was good enough for me. Though based on my voting record in presidential elections, I began to think I was a jinx. I thought about it long and hard in 1992, but I still went with who was the best candidate for the job. That was the first time I voted for the candidate who won!

(146,351 posts)It's not a winning strategy in a country where people can't remember history. Reagan is little more than a legendary figure in 2016, and few people know much, if anything, about what he did and didn't do. Bringing it up requires explaining why it's relevant today, and that wastes time.
We have an opponent in Donald Trump who can be attacked directly about things he has done. We should do that, and let history remain history.

(31 posts)Not sure if this was included but in 1987 the FCC abolished the policy, which dictates that public broadcast license-holders have a duty to present important issues to the public and here's the "fairness" part to give multiple perspectives while doing so.
Which gave birth to the ilk: Sean Hannity, Limbaugh, Fox News etc.
