(12,448 posts)Here's another kick and a big rec!
As I watched the Miami rally today, I really couldn't understand why people call Tim Kaine "boring." He didn't bore me, or the crowd in Miami! Although I'm in a neighboring state (MD), I didn't know a lot about Kaine. After today, I'm excited! I think he's a perfect fit. Like Hillary, he's spent his career in public service. He shares her values. I actually LIKE the fact that although he's against abortion, he doesn't think he has a right to affect a woman's right to choose. To me, that shows integrity. I'm really tired of politicians who constantly talk about their religion (I'm looking at you, Mike Pence) and want to force everybody else to follow their faith.
I'm excited about this ticket!
Cha
(298,139 posts)Similar to mine.. I knew nothing about Tim Kaine except the basics and was actually bummed when I saw Hillary's choice. Wow did that change fast when I started reading and listening to his speeches about who he really is!

(298,139 posts)Why Sen. Kaines Español Is More Than Just A Spanish Speech
During his speech, the Virginia Democrat spoke of his decision to address the Senate in Spanish saying:
I think it is appropriate that I spend a few minutes explaining the bill in Spanish, a language that has been spoken in this country since Spanish missionaries founded St. Augustine, Florida in 1565. Spanish is also spoken by almost 40 million Americans who have a lot at stake in the outcome of this debate.
On Twitter supporters commended Kaine for his bold move. Ali Noorani, the executive director of the National Immigration Forum, wrote: "After so much talk about English proficiency, kind of awesome for @TimKaine to deliver his Senate floor speech on #immigration in Spanish."
Kaines proficiency in Spanish even drew praise, where one tweet read: Tim Kaines Spanish is pretty good, guys.

2. He is fluent in Spanish
Kaine learned Spanish while living in Honduras in 1980. He took a year off from law school to work at a technical school with Jesuit missionaries.
In 2013, Kaine spoke in Spanish for almost 13 minutes on the floor of the Senate advocating for an immigration overhaul bill crafted by the bipartisan "Gang of Eight."
It marked the first time a senator gave an entire speech on the floor in a language that was not English, although others have spoken briefly in Spanish before.
************************************************************************************
I love that he was only in Honduras for a year way back when and yet he speaks fluent Espanol now!
Oh and this..
3. He has a son in the military
Kaine's son Nat is an active-duty Marine, which makes Kaine one of just a few members of Congress who have a child serving in the military.
In 2014, Kaine met with Virginia veterans at a momentous time in his son's military career, according to the Culpeper Star Exponent. "My son is an infantry officer who takes control of his first platoon Monday so these are issues that matter to me personally," he said. Perhaps as a result of his son's military experience, Kaine has focused on military and foreign policy in Congress, serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
In an interview on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Kaine criticized comments that GOP nominee Donald Trump made criticizing the military.
"When I hear Donald Trump say the American military is a disaster, I want to go through the screen and shake the guy," Kaine said in the interview. "We ought to have a commander in chief who talks about our troops with respect and gratitude."

We support the CFPBs initial steps towards releasing a proposed rule and urge you to issue the strongest possible rules to end the damaging effects of predatory lending, the Senators wrote in a letter to CFPB Director Richard Cordray. Small-dollar, short-term loans with astronomical interest rates that pull consumers into a cycle of debt are predatory. These loans have high default rates, including after the borrower has already paid hundreds or thousands of dollars because of triple-digit interest rates.

Written to the heads of the Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the missive asked regulators to reconsider how they apply safeguards to the activities of regional banks meaning those that are bigger than the smallest, community lenders but smaller than international mega-banks such as JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup.
Kaine was one of four Senate Democrats signatories on the letter, including Sen. Mark Warner, a fellow Virginia Democrat. Kaine and Warner have a strong constituent interest because Capital One, the tenth biggest bank in the country by assets, is based in McLean, Virginia.

Biden: Kaine 'will be a strong partner' for Clinton
"He will be a strong partner for Secretary Clinton at home and abroad and his steady hand will continue the trajectory of our economy toward full resurgence," he added.
Biden proved to be Barack Obama's first choice in 2008 after a selection process in which Kaine was a close runner-up. In 2012, as Biden and the president ran for reelection and Kaine for his current seat, Biden and Kaine campaigned together on the final day before the election.

(18,672 posts)So far, I like that he separates his religious beliefs from politics and tends to do what is right. He may be against gay marriage, but has a record of expanding gay rights. He's also never impinged upon a woman's right to choose, in spite of his beliefs against abortion.
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/06/tim-kaine-the-evolution-of-pro-choice-politics.html
On second thought, is he? An article this week in The Hill calls abortion policy Kaine's one big "weakness." Like many observant Catholic Democrats over the years, Kaine's mantra on reproductive rights is that while he's "personally opposed" to abortion, he's largely inclined to keep the law out of women's reproductive decisions. Yes, he's favored parental-notification laws, but has carefully insisted on ensuring young women in danger of parental pressure to carry a pregnancy to term will have a judicial workaround. Yes, he's favored bans on so-called "partial-birth abortions," but only with exceptions where the health of the mother is at risk, which separates him from the entire anti-abortion movement, which uniformly hates health exceptions. He has a 100 percent rating of his votes in the Senate from Planned Parenthood. His policy positions on abortion may not be ideal to reproductive-rights advocates, but they are acceptable, particularly if the top spot on the ticket is occupied by an old friend like Hillary Clinton.

(7,540 posts)We should be the party who says a person, even a Senator, can have personal beliefs that don't match up lock stock with the party line, especially when he's very clearly not intending to impose a complete personal worldview on a political issue. That's what's being liberal is. Since it sounds like he's "inclined to keep the law out of women's reproductive decisions," this is exactly the way that one keeps their personal beliefs and respects everyone else's. One can be pro-reproductive rights and still not feel that partial birth abortions should be legal, especially when the "except for safety of the mother" clause is included.

He worked as a missionary, and he taught welding and carpentry to teenagers. While in Honduras, he became fluent in Spanish. His experience in Honduras has had a huge impact on his view of the world of the haves and have-nots.
According to the Washington Post profile: The Rev. Patricio Wade, 79, still working in Honduras, remembers Kaine as wide-eyed at his first brush with overwhelming poverty. Tim saw a system where very few people dominated and had all the money and power.

(11,495 posts)He sounds OK to me. I know some on DU are having a cow, but then again they had that same cow when Hillary said she was going to run, so I don't really pay any attention to them since most of them were never going to voter for her anyway.
I think she knows what she is doing, and she knows him. That's good enough for me.

I'm really glad she chose him.. I wasn't at first until I learned about who he really is!
Gracias Andy!
At the very least this keeps Virginia blue, which means she needs to hold only Florida or Ohio to win.

(5,644 posts)6. Anne Holton, Kaines wife, shares his passion for social justice. Anne Holton has the distinction of having been the daughter of one Virginia governor her father A. Linwood Holton, Jr. and wife of Tim Kaine. When she was a girl, her parents made the decision to send her and her siblings to the largely black public schools. It was a controversial decision that required police protection for Anne and her sister, but it began Holtons dedication to the cause of public education.
Hillary Clintons campaign also chipped in with some Kaine factoids after Fridays announcement, see below:

(298,139 posts)During his speech, the Virginia Democrat spoke of his decision to address the Senate in Spanish saying:

(6,979 posts)SOME folks are finding any excuse not to vote for her. Hey, if they don't want to vote for her, then just DON'T. You listing Ben and Nina and even Joy? This progressive "purity" is so off-putting. Your candidate didn't win, hello. You don't get to control the party or who the VP choice is when your candidate didn't win. I definitely believe in compromise with a more progressive platform. However, after that, I'm gonna trust in Hillary's choice for VP more than some disgruntled voters who are throwing hissy-fits.

(6,979 posts)Wasn't as dismissive as Nina and Ben, and there was some other woman there with brown hair. A Debbie-Downer type. But, Joy wasn't too enthusiastic which is fine. She wasn't bad or anything, but she said that while the pick is "okay," she kind of doesn't feel Kaine will do much for the ticket.
Look at the merchandise tRump is pushing. Pence? The guy whose running Indiana into the GROUND, and who even many folks in Indiana want gone? Would progressives rather have him as VP running the show (Because we KNOW tRump couldn't govern as well as his new-born grandchild and he pretty much said he'd turn the presidency over to whomever. The guy is a sociopath and narcissist). And believe me, one of the ONLY reasons I watch MSNBCRNCTMZ is because of her.
Oh well, whatever. Everyone has the right to their opinions and so do Joy, Ben and Nina.
However, so does Hillary and she made her choice for VP. A good choice in MY mind that I can more than live and be happy with.

(298,139 posts)There were other choices that would have brought excitement to this election. Here's the problem as I see it. Several of those choices would have brought excitement but only to certain segments. Others not so much. Tim K will more than satisfy the largest segment of the democratic population there is once they get to know him. Here's a hint. It ain't us, although there are those who like to believe it is. Here's another hint. That largest segment of the democratic population has never heard of Democratic Underground.

As for Tim Kaine, the more I read of him, the more I like. I think Hillary and her campaign brain trust are counting on the theme that would truly blow TrumpleThinSkin/Pence right out of the water: COMPETENCE.

I didn't trash talk just didn't want him.. ooops. In my defense I knew nothing about him.. he was like this hidden gem.
Other then feeling pretty strongly that it wouldn't be Bernie or Elizabeth I really had no idea who she would choose for a running mate. I kind of just closed my eyes and put my trust in Hillary that she would make the right decision and that decision, although not apparent immediately, turned out to be a good one. The one thing I knew was that she doesn't make a move without due consideration of the outcome. Looking like a blowout come November.

I never understood the description of Tim Kaine as vanilla. He's one of the most endearing communicators Democrats have.

(11,833 posts)Tim Kaine is a solid liberal and he gives a good name for public service and low-key style. Hillary picked someone who can help her do her job most effectively. He will help other democrats, other liberals, and most importantly will help all Americans.

(15,376 posts)and all those who contributed with more clarifications and information about Tim Kaine. I knew the major things: Virginia Governor, Virginia Senator and DNC Chair, etc.
But it is those VERY impressive "minor" things: fluent Spanish speaker, a year working in Honduras (somewhat like a Peace Corps experience - as a Returned PCV myself, I KNOW firsthand how such experiences can change one's perspective for the better), attending a mostly black church for 30 years, and having the great good sense to marry of woman with a strong passion for social justice and public education who has actually "walked the walk" herself. Etc., etc., etc.
What a TRULY WONDERFUL TICKET we have!
Kaine was not my first preference. We Dems are very lucky that we have the plethora of choices we do. I - almost - pity the GOP because they have NOTHING - NADA - RIEN! But Kaine IS Hillary's choice and he has some truly incredible pluses, IMO.
So count me as ALL IN FOR THE DURATION!
CLINTON-KAINE FOR THE WIN IN NOVEMBER!!!!!

(9,494 posts)So many original Spanish speakers enter public life and can orate beautifully in English. It so rare that it is incongruous when it happens the other way around. I think that learning someone else's language is a very big sign of respect. I like that about him. Plus, he originally learned the language to help people.

(7,365 posts)I also like that he is a man of faith and has walked that walk. He doesn't impress me as someone who will wear it on his sleeve like the right wingers do, but if you challenge him on it then you may not like what you find (that comment is for the "Hillary hangs with Lucifer" crowd).
Does he have perfect views on everything? No, but ideological purity is a fools game. Yes, I have issues with his LGBT views, but that is moving in the right direction whether Kaine is the VP or Barney Frank is. NOTHING is stopping LGBT rights, EXCEPT a hostile Supreme Court and getting Mrs Clinton and Mr. Kaine elected will take care of that.

(11,664 posts)Thinking back to the choice I made in the primary... I voted for HRC, but I thought long and hard about Bernie and my wife chose to vote for him because he most closely shares our positions on issues. The reason I chose Clinton in the end is that I feel like her husband she is a pragmatist. I was disillusioned with Obamas 1st term especially in the 1st 2 yrs when I felt he tried to hard to appease republicans and was a bit too idealistic. Tim Kaine is a pragmatic choice and I trust her team has done their homework about who he will appeal to and where... making that kind of choice is why I voted for her. I want to win and I want a president who will get work done in an environment of complete stagnation.

(81,612 posts)I'm actually crying.
We're going to have the FEMALE of the species, and THAT mindset, and THAT worldview, and THAT consciousness - in the Oval Office.
For even if only four years - we're going to have a seismic shift in this country. Even if only for that long, we will be a matriarchy. I'd like to try that out. Leaning toward the feminine (nurturer) as opposed to the quintessential male (read macho).
OMG we need this mindset in the White House - and Tim Kaine there by her side! Shit. I. Am. Impressed. Didn't know a whole lot about Tim Kaine. He's got "the mark of the Jesuits" on him. I'm a lifelong Catholic. Catholic school from pre-K through senior year high school. Jesuits were in the periphery of my childhood and teens all the time. Jerry Brown has that "mark of the Jesuits" on him. Know who else is a Jesuit? Pope Francis. Jesuits are about open minds, all things considered, objective knowledge and understanding. The FACTS. REALITY. And Kaine's Hillary's VP pick. DAYUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(106 posts)Take as many people as you can to the polls. We have a ticket that will change the world for the better. And we also have a great Pope who will offer support world wide for the principles these two will fight for. It's a perfect storm for concerted effort to change the hate the "others" want so bad.
And how great this day is. We have shown the world we can elect a minority as president, weather the biggest hate campaign the world has ever known, and come back with our first female president and throw in two Catholics too boot. Thank you Lord for giving us this ticket and may the peace of Christ be with us all.
