2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMichael Bloomberg to endorse Hillary at prime time during convention.
The news is an unexpected move from Mr. Bloomberg, who has not been a member of the Democratic Party since 2000; was elected the mayor of New York City as a Republican; and later became an independent.
But it reflects Mr. Bloombergs increasing dismay about the rise of Donald J. Trump and a determination to see that the Republican nominee is defeated.

Good news. This could be really valuable to Hillary with swing voters and moderates. He's got a lot of credibility with independents, and unlike Trump, he is actually a very good businessman.

(20,709 posts)I don't agree with him on everything, but he's solidly liberal on social issues. He's personally spent a lot of money funding gun violence related causes. And he was a good mayor of NYC.
On economic issues, he's to the right of me, but he's not some crazy right-winger.
JRLeft
(7,010 posts)He wants more deregulation of the banking industry.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)And "corporate tool" is pushing it, though like I said he is to the right of me on economic issues without a doubt. Though I guess to some people everyone to the right of Bernie is a "corporate tool".

(7,010 posts)The fact you like Bloomberg is amazing. Most black New Yorkers hated the man.

DanTex
(20,709 posts)they are about the least healthy food that you can put in your body. There's precedent for this: cigarettes are taxed. The people who this annoyed most are right-wingers like Sarah Palin.
And even though he gets a lot of grief for the soda tax, that's only one of the many public health measures he pushed for. NYC was one of if not the first major city to ban smoking in restaurants and bars. When that was happening, people yelled "Nanny State" too. Now that's the law almost everywhere, and it's a good thing.
He banned trans-fats in restaurants. He pushed for more calorie posting on menus.
Whatever you think of the soda tax, his public health efforts overall were a good thing.

-didn't want to rent to black folk even black veterans. That's rich coming from somebody with a deferment.
- wanted the death penalty for the five black teenagers falsely accused of raping a jogger in Central Park
- wanted Jewish accountants and not blacks ones because he said Jews are naturally better with money. that was a twofer. he insulted Jews and blacks.
-said blacks are inherently lazy.
-said Barack Obama is an illegal alien.

(20,709 posts)He also wants to cut social security and/or medicare, which I also don't agree with. But I do agree with him on guns, abortion, the environment, lgbt issues, immigration and more.
Like I said, he's a moderate.
JRLeft
(7,010 posts)Moderate usually means pro deregulation.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)I don't know if he's actually more pro-deregulation. He's definitely in favor of more environmental regulation.
He does have conservative views on some issues, like Social Security. And stop and frisk like you mentioned. And he gave Goldman Sachs a tax break.
He's a moderate, left on some issues, right on others. Either way, it's good to have his endorsement. He's not actually going to be president, so his more conservative views don't matter.

(4,451 posts)The commentator that was on was exchanging pleasantries about Hillary with his guest. They were talking about Bloom berg endorsing Clinton and the appeal moderates would have toward her. I don't know the name of who I was watching since I rarely watch. I might have to start watching. It may be changing.

(59,511 posts)He worked with the State Department to head a group of city officials to help each other making their cities greener and was a UN special envoy on the issue.
Link to explanation of the SD/Bloomberg Philanthropies effort - "our cities, our climate". Link to speeches at the event mentioned in that source: http://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2015/10/248043.htm Joint Kerry/Bloomberg op-ed on climate change - http://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2015/10/248037.htm
Bloomberg also spoke in Paris before the talks that resulted in the Paris Climate Accord. https://www.mikebloomberg.com/news/the-importance-of-city-action-in-combating-climate-change-during-cop21-in-paris/ This was a very big deal.
More recently, he is heading a Bloomberg group that is bringing together business and finance people to focus on energy challenges:
Here was an announcement of Kerry delivering a keynote speech to them:
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will deliver the global policy keynote at Bloomberg New Energy and Finance (BNEF)s Future of Energy Summit at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City at 10:30 a.m. on April 5, 2016.
Secretary Kerrys remarks will focus on the inexorable link between energy choices and climate change, the path forward in the wake of the historic Paris Agreement, and the transition toward a global, low-carbon economy.
Since 2008, BNEFs global Future of Energy Summit has convened key decision-makers from the business, finance and policy communities to focus intently on critical energy challenges ranging from power, transportation, and regulation, to energy finance and energy security.

Given that Trump thinks the Paris Climate Accord a "bad deal" that he will rip up, I am shocked that anyone following Bloomberg is the least surprised.
