2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDNC ratings for night one...HIGHER than the RNC!
http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/democratic-national-convention-ratings-night-one-bigger-rnc-1201823316/Some more caveats than usual this go-round: These preliminary numbers only take into account viewing done until 11 p.m. Bernie Sanders much-anticipated speech endorsing Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton plowed through the primetime barrier and didnt end until nearly 11:30 on the East Coast. Since Sanders speech was highly anticipated, though, and followed a burst of social media activity surrounding Michelle Obama and Elizabeth Warrens speeches, and given that people may have tuned in to their local news and simply stayed with Sanders speech, there could be an upward adjustment once the final numbers come in later this afternoon.
That said, the preliminary broadcast ratings for night one of the DNC are a little higher than those of the RNC: The DNC clocked in with 10.54 million total viewers and a 2.5 demo rating. The RNC weighed in with 10.1 million total and a 2.3 demo rating. Cable ratings released later this afternoon will give a fuller picture.
For comparisons sake, the first night of the 2012 DNC drew about 600,000 more total viewers in early broadcast ratings (11.14 million), and a 2.6 in the demo

(6,716 posts)For him, it's all about ratings. His convention stunk it up, ours beat them on night one...which I'll have to say, surprised me!

(10,857 posts)The realtime chat was overloaded with the "Trumpster fire" posts of foolish kids and Russians. Then Ken Jeong's Funny or Die video came up:
And for a moment, chat became civil. Finally, one poster said:
"Where'd the Trumpster fire go? Checking the labels on their hats?"
Twitch is infamous for its instant creation of memes, and on the first day of DNC, viewers quickly noted that whenever minorities, immigration, or gay rights were mentioned, the chat exploded with Trumpster fire rage. Viewers began responding with one word, "Triggered," meaning that the racists were provoked by whatever scares them, and began to flood the page with the "rainbow Kappa" emote, the wordless symbol of sarcasm and contempt.
It was glorious. There were well over 30,000 unique viewers last night. You can watch the train wreck here:

(2,830 posts)Apparently amongst young Donald supporters, "cuck" is the new "nigger". On one hand, it's very disturbing that it seems as though the white supremacist's tide is rising as they seize on the message that Trump is putting out. On the other hand, I think people need to see it to understand that racism is alive and well in the US and always has been.

(10,857 posts)As someone said, roughly, "this convention is a rogue-like game where you have only one life, and if Trump wins, you lose."
