2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOK, I'll say it. Bernie should have been a bigger person.
He called for the official record to reflect the actual votes.
OK, fair enough I guess?
But what is he trying to prove?
I dunno.
Then he called to 'suspend the rules', and named Hillary as the official nominee.
But he didn't call for her nomination to be "by acclamation".
The chair did that.
In 2008 Hillary did it for Obama.
I was a Bernie $upporter, but he disappointed me tonight.

(116,027 posts)Sounds like a quibble to me. Did he have to say the word "acclamation" since the result of releasing his delegates was exactly that?

(4,451 posts)I think we deserve to have our voices heard. I'm dissapointed in Bernie. In 2008 Hillary lost by less than 1% of the vote. Today Hillary won by a landslide.. I too need and should have my voice heard.

(4,311 posts)He did everything he could have done to try to unify the party while keeping as many of his supporters on board as possible. This is petty, especially on such a wonderful and historic day.

(30,481 posts)To become the first female nominee of a major party. She did so in epic fashion. It was a bookend blowout. Who cares about the rest at this point.
This is about Clinton and the first female nominee no matter how hard others try to bask in the limelight.

(20,998 posts)PHILADELPHIA Sen. Bernie Sanders, in a move to bridge the divide in the Democratic Pary, on Tuesday moved to nominate Hillary Clinton by acclamation as the Democratic nominee for president.
His motion came after nearly two hours of roll call votes and was greeted with chants of "Bernie, Bernie."
The Vermont has waited 15 months to watch his delegates cast ballots for him at the Democratic National Convention.

(4,651 posts)Madam Secretary, Madam Secretary, I move that the convention suspend the procedural rules and suspend the further conduct of the roll call vote. All votes cast by the delegates will be counted, and that I move Senator Barack Obama of Illinois be selected by this convention by acclamation as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States!

I MOVE THAT ALL VOTES CAST BY DELEGATES BE REFLECTED IN THE OFFICIAL RECORD, AND I MOVE THAT HILLARY CLINTON BE SELECTED AS THE NOMINEE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

(11,949 posts)This convention is working out better than most of us expected.
I supported Hillary, but near about 45% supported Sanders. Recording that fact makes us stronger, not weaker.
Hell, half the republicans boycotted their convention since they knew their voice would be squelched.
And Bernie is now all in for her! He pretty much sent the message that a person who does not support Clinton cannot claim to be a Bernie supporter.

The people that are still booing and walking out aren't even Democrats. They came here to throw a temper tantrum, and are using Bernie as platform to do that. He's not responsible for them anymore. He's done everything he can.

(59,902 posts)A vote by acclamation would have made it as if no one voted, and would have made Bernie's delegate's work meaningless. And that's something I didi't want to see.

(14,249 posts)He needed to make sure his voters knew their votes would be recorded and counted while also allowing Secretary Clinton to be nominated by acclamation.
This couldn't have been easy for him, but he did what he needed to do to unify the party. I applaud him for it.

(16,203 posts)1) As a demonstration of democracy in action, a message that when you vote, your votes ARE counted and they DO matter. It's been a consistent theme and message, consistent with letting Californians have their say too. In America we keep trying to shortcut democracy. It was methodical, and a sacred ritual, when I was a child. Doing this the way he did is a way to honor the process. Treating it as a ritual imbues it with an appropriate degree of respect.
2) Buy-in of the Bernie voters. Seeing the count, going all the way to the end, made it clear that he fought the good fight but didn't win the race. Many of us who were skeptical about the machinations of the elections will remember that at some level there was a fair count, and he did well but not well enough, and there was a clear winner and it's time to support her.
3) Most importantly, a record of the count with Bernie getting 43% gives hope to future progressives, future democratic socialists, and any democrats who question whether it is safe to come out as progressive and left leaning. After thirty five years of propaganda that tried to make "liberal" a dirty word, after decades of equating socialism with communism, here is a clear undeniable proof of the extent of support for those ideals.
I'm very glad he handled it this way.
