2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Bernie or bust people and tonight's speech
could spell the end of Bernie's attempt to move the party to the left. He got planks in the platform. He got speaking time. He got all of the party praising him. Now, it seems his more tone-deaf and uninformed followers plan to shout down Hillary during her speech.
They will make mockery of the movement. It makes me sick.

(603 posts)and if you include them booing a Democratic Party icon like Elijah Cummings, I think they've already done damage to their own movement.

(19,328 posts)These people are a little disturbing. I understand some of their frustration, but they have a scorched earth policy of wanting 100% and no less, it's what you expect from the far right.
They have a purity test for everyone and anyone who fails gets their wrath.

(603 posts)I think you have a mix of purists and anarchists in the Bernie diehards. They include people who reject any politician who does not pass all (or almost all) of their far-left metric. In addition, since their preferred candidate lost, many are willing to allow Trump to win, who they believe will be such a disaster as president his administration will "destroy" the system and allow them to build a new one. Many of them are privileged enough to consider allowing Trump to win, while others will be hurt but are mentally off-the-rails with rage at this point.

tough balancing act.
When people self-identify as Berniecrats, the first thing people will ask themselves: "is this person one of those goddamn crazy people?"
Not helpful.

(11,125 posts)How does it benefit the party to energize privileged little snots who then try to destroy the party. Is that what Bernie was all about? It's like the 27 year-old who's living at home. Then he burns the house down because he didn't want mashed potatoes for dinner.
A lot of this is because Berne flirted with the right wing "Hillary is a monster" meme while he was running. Now he can't put it back in the box.

(13,776 posts)I think he had a HUGE impact on the Democratic platform, which is what he wanted. These people are letting the perfect be the enemy of the good--and we do NOT have that luxury given who the Republican nominee is.
And while I still believe that they have a right to express themselves (in the sense that, while I would expect Republicans to quash dissent, Democrats are better than that), they should not exercise that right. It's simply impractical. Are they unaware, or uncaring, that the stakes are do-or-die, or that they are now actively turning people against them?
If Trump were even remotely tolerable, that'd be one thing, but he is an existential threat to the United States. Disrupting the convention on national TV is self-indulgence--self-indulgence that they have a right to, but it is just SUCH a bad idea. They should wait for smaller campaign appearances, where they could make their points without being loathed. (I myself don't loathe them, but there is a time and a place where they could be effective, and this is NOT IT.)

(1,048 posts)Joy Reid said it best that if it even appeared as though someone was going to say "B-"....not even the whole "Boo" but that it appeared as though they were going to fix their lips to do so there would've been problems in that hall.

(23,644 posts)I think that the party will go "left" as it captured by new generations. I put "left" in quotes because I don't really think it's too useful of a concept. I do think the party will adopt positions in the future that are considered more "left" than those presently adopted, regardless of the delegates' response to any speech.

Those supporters who brought new energy and passion to the party and who are uniting to elect Hillary will not only keep the movement alive but may be surprised to discover how many ideals we who have been Hillary supporters all along share with them!
WE are the "revolution." But that "revolution" is not in showing up en masse for big rallies or attempting to disrupt conventions of one's own political allies, it is in the ongoing quiet, daily struggle of moving things forward while trying to ensure that the most vulnerable are not left behind. That doesn't usually get the headlines, but it is the most effective way of changing things.
