2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHow a 'well-to-do' couple saves with Obamacare
Claims that health insurance under Obamacare is actually more expensive are offered with little supporting factual documentation.. To satisfy my curiosity, I decided to do an apples to apples comparison of the health insurance premium my wife and I paid before Obamacare vs. what we are now paying after enrolling in Obamacare. I believe many of the well-to-do have stridently opposed Obamacare.
With my income, most people would consider my wife and me part of that well-to-do group. However, unlike most in that group, we are considered uninsurable due to pre-existing conditions. As a result, we had to go into Minnesotas high-risk pool, known as the Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association (MCHA), to purchase health insurance. I am 63 and my wife is 61. Beginning on July 1, 2012, through Jan. 1, 2014, the cost of our MCHA premium was $1,788 per month for my wife and me. This was for a $1,000 deductible plan for both my wife and me, with a maximum lifetime benefit of $5 million.
My wife and I have now enrolled in Obamacare via a large, well-known health insurance company with coverage that began Jan. 1, 2014. We are now paying $1,053.98 per month (compared with $1,788 per month in the previously mentioned pre-Obamacare plan) with a similar $1,000 deductible. This is a savings of $734 per month $8,808 per year. A 41 percent cost savings. Wow! In addition, the Obamacare plan has an unlimited lifetime benefit, which is literally priceless for those who find themselves in a severe health crisis.

(15,438 posts)We need more positive stories about how the PPACA is changing people's lives in the current seas of negative ones.
Thanks for the find, QE.

(30,058 posts)I am retired with healthcare benefits but starting in April we will be able to shop on an exchange because there are more insured and those using the emergency rooms for health care which is the most expensive method and hospitals will not need to add the cost of their losses to our bills. It is a win-win situation.

Even though he's a young man and rarely sees a dr. - he was deemed to have a preexisting condition, which can be just about anything - even minor conditions. It's just another reason to charge more money.
Since they can't consider preexisting conditions any more he was able to get a much better rate - Thank you Obamacare!!!
EDIT to add back story - When my son turned 27 and I could no longer keep him on my plan, he applied for his own plan which was denied because they deemed him to have a preexisting condition. We then quickly signed him up for COBRA before the month was up, or that option would have expired. Insurance through COBRA for this 27 year old was just about $500.00 a month. We paid this for him. Now fast forward to January - He qualifies for a health plan with dental!!! for a little over $250 a month.
I see a post below that says some of these stories are hard to believe. Just the fact that "preexisting conditions", everything from asthma to cysts, cannot be considered is going to save a lot of people money!

(47,568 posts)Recently the Republicans were claiming that most of the ones signing for the ACA already had insurance, as oppose to the uninsured. Stories like yours give the accurate picture which they still refuse to accept.

(15,043 posts)they were unprepared for the massive numbers of people who signed up and had difficulty getting the paperwork processed by the start of the year.
Yeah, it was a problem. But a quality problem, for sure. And so far, the quality of health care we have has not diminished.

(24,324 posts)No more of that Obamacare nonsense for them. He had nothing to do with this. Why, Mittens had the same thing in Massassasseecchuutteess years ago. (I wish they would change the spelling of that place.)

(18,219 posts)For years, their insurance increased to the point of being out of sight, and they are paying about 1/2 of what they paid prior to this, with the same deductibles and less out of pocket.

(4,260 posts)not to mention their lives. Preexisting conditions are everything from cysts to asthma to psoriasis to cancer. My 27 year old was denied for a more minor condition and needed to opt for a more expensive COBRA health plan - $500.00. - Obamacare allowed him to qualify for a $250.00 plan with dental, since his so called "preexisting condition" could no longer be considered.

Premiums for the Upper Middle Class & RICH would be reduced.
