By KEN THOMAS | ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) As Hillary Rodham Clinton mulls a second presidential bid, liberals are closely watching whether the onetime supporter of the Iraq war moves to the left or straddles the center.
Democrats say economic issues such as raising the minimum wage and protecting Social Security have become paramount for anyone aiming to lead the party after years of tough economic times.
During the 2008 primary campaign against Barack Obama, Clinton was hurt by her stand on the Iraq war while she was a senator. But she burnished her image among party loyalists during four years at the State Department in the Obama administration. Now liberals want to see how she might carry the torch from Obama.
"We're going to see income inequality play the same role that the war in Iraq played in 2008," said Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org, a liberal advocacy group. "This is less about what she did before. The issue landscape right now is very different than in 2008."
Whether a viable Clinton alternative emerges for the 2016 campaign remains a looming question.

(40,416 posts)Maybe people ought to worry about giving a Democratic president in 2017 a US Congress which can fucking govern!!!!!
That is, before we start playing fantasy football on the 2016 presidential election!!
I'm all for such useless gum flapping, but only after next November's election and with Democratic majorities in the bag.
Then, and only then, will I not vilify any and all {whosits} 2016 gum flapping, no matter who {whosits} is.
Anybody who was alive and alert from the 1970's on should know that if one wants to take over one of the two big political parties in the USA, one starts at the bottom, not the top.

(2,312 posts)Put Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders on the top of our ticket, win in a massive blowout victory, and we are still screwed if we are stuck with a Republican House and/or Senate.
President Obama was elected President, not annointed King. We have never gave him the votes he needed in Congress to get a progressive agenda done. We need the control of the House and 60+ votes in the Senate or a majority and reform of the fillibuster rule.
That's how the system is rigged. Not liking it does not change the reality of the dynamic. The Republicans know how the game is played. We ought to pay attention to how they cling to power when they are so far out of step with the majority of Americans.

(1,309 posts)It is all about the economics and just because you believe in equal rights to slave for a pittance no matter your sex or your race does not make you a good candidate. It is all about economics amnd democracy. When we have true democracy, we will have economic justice. Until we get rid of Gerrymanderingwhich cancels out our votes and other ways to keep the people impotent in the political arena we will not have economic justice and corporatists like the Clintons will laugh all the way to the bank exclaiming how non-racist and non-sexist they are.
