Why (California Lt. Gov.) Gavin Newsom should run for president

Opinion by Bill Katovsky, San Francisco Chronicle, April 7 2015

If the Democratic Party really wants to hold on to the White House following President Obama’s exit, it needs to look past Hillary Rodham Clinton. The best hope for victory is California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Newsom hasn’t publicly expressed any interest in running for president in 2016. Instead, his eye is on becoming governor in 2019. Yet, if by some cosmic roll of the dice Newsom does decide to declare his candidacy for president, all this gauzy talk of Clinton’s inevitability and lock on the Democratic nomination will take a huge hit. Dare I say game-changer?

Voters love Clinton in liberal bastions such as the Bay Area, yet it’s doubtful if she will be able to inspire a passionate get-out-to-vote movement elsewhere. Female voters clearly have a strong affinity for Clinton, but younger voters will be leery of someone her age (she’s 67), who isn’t tech savvy and has a queasy relationship with e-mail and computer servers. Her resume is long and distinguished, though it’s wishful thinking to believe Clinton represents the nation’s future in the same sense that the Republican Party’s fresh crop of contenders — Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Rand Paul — do for the GOP base.

Newsom wrote the book on how citizens can reshape their government in a digital age (“Citizenville” was published in 2013). In 2004, Newsom took a risky, courageous gamble with his political career when, as San Francisco mayor, he directed the city clerk’s office to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in defiance of state law. But Newsom’s political instincts were dead on then. It’s time for him to act boldly again.

I think Hilary Clinton can win the White House in 2016, so I'm not in agreement with the premise here. But I can see Newsome running in 2024, especially if he serves as California's Governor.

and I just don't see it. Nice guy but I doubt his intestinal fortitude. I just see him as a lightweight, he did some good things for San Francisco but I don't see anything beyond Sacto. I said the same thing when a poster was celebrating the fact that Kamala Harris announced she was running for Barbara's seat. Both she and Gavin are pretty to look at, quite intelligent, and have good intentions; I just don't see them holding their own in the biggest, toughest boxing ring in the world: Washington DC. Well thought out comment though, there is something about Hillary's nomination that makes me suspicious. Republicans hate her more than they do Barack, and they are going to do something to prevent her from winning.

The Republicans have had many, many years to prepare their battle plans for a Hillary Clinton candidacy. I have no doubt they will pull out all the stops, legal and otherwise, to damage her beyond electability, imho.

Who knows, maybe her so far uncontested nomination fits their strategy and she's the candidate they want to run against.

or some other name. So far the Clown show is lining up, might be interesting watching a few months of comedy presented by the GOP.

6. Kamala's refusal to endorse the legalization of cannabis baffles my mind. At least Gavin understands

that is a winning issue that pulls libertarian types away from the GOP.
You're right though, he is a light weight. He couldn't beat Jerry for Gov. so that about it for him.
Maybe Congress?
I wouldn't mind him taking over for Boxer actually, instead of Harris but that's because of the weed issue.

He needs to write another book, set up an organization, raise a billion dollars, get national exposure -- all a little late for now. I am in CA and I hope he runs for gov. And I agree we need to start looking down the road and start grooming for the future. Newsom is nowhere near ready for a 2016 run.

stand by my original comments, he's way too moody to be president. Seriously, I am a life long Democrat, a native Californian, and I know the Democrats dominate California but I just don't see anyone who has any sort of backbone in this state that can take on Washington. They are all little fish in a little pond, DC is the biggest of the bigs: sharks, orcas, killers just waiting on the feeding frenzy. Gavin, Kamala, Villaraigrosa, Maldonado (an idiot minority repub), they are going to bent over and take the wood if they ever make it that far.
