2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe politcal revolution is starting
A month ago, I was still questionable as to whom I would vote for. Then along came Bernie and his commitment to be our next president. What has happened in the past 3-4 weeks has been phenomenal. At first, I didn't think he had a prayer, especially since he doesn't have the funds to pay for expensive media air time. The next thing you knew, the media had no other choice than to interview him. He's been all over the place. ABC, Yahoo, MSNBC, FAUX, etc and etc... and he's got people pumped up. It's been amazing. And believe me, more is coming. He wants to win, and win it for the American people. We the people, desperately need this type of a political figure. No other candidate is like Bernie. No ONE!!!
He stands for everything politics is suppose to be about. Not the 1% attempting to run and ruin our country. Look at how good that's worked for us so far. People are figuring him out and are coming out to support him in large numbers. Here we go!!!
Now for the good news. My wife was a big Hilliary supporter. After this past month of Bernie, Bernie, Bernie, she has now changed her mind and supports Bernie. Then, I sent a few of his video links to a republican friend of mine. You're not going to believe it. She's now a huge Bernie fan. Yahoo!!! People are waking up to the ignorance and corruptness in Washington, and are no longer are going to take it.
As Bernie has said, Enough is Enough!!!
I can't wait for the debates. Bernie gets up, makes his points, and Hilliary and the chosen clown will just sit there and say "duh". The looks on their faces will be worth the price of admission. Bernie will tear them apart, and not say one negative thing. I can't wait.

(23,946 posts)One last time - political strategy deployed in a manner to support your chosen candidate by tearing down the other says more about the strategist and the "strategy" than either of the candidates.
Some folks have heard of "the Cut-throat defense", some have not.

(9,810 posts)Bernie has the capability to wear down an opponent just by debating the FACTS, sticking to the ISSUES. That's where he'll bern them.

(7,018 posts)Sanders is definitely not. He is letting it be known what he stands for and will fight for.
He is also telling the truth of what's really going on in our nation. Too many of us are
uninformed and misinformed.

any say at all. Only the rich do.

(3,544 posts)On the contrary. Merely pointing out who is the better democrat. If this revolution does not happen and Bernie loses, I will support the next best democrat.
Didn't your parents teach you to vote for your best candidate? Well, It will never be anyone on the GOP for me. And right now, Bernie is the one for me. And not just for me, but for all your children and grandchildren.
As for the debates, what can the candidates say when Bernie is making honest, valid points about Universal Healthcare, Pre K childcare, Citizens United, Social Security, Medicare, Education, Minimum wage, workers rights. It's the ONLY way to reverse the damage the Koch brothers have created.
He's got my vote and I'm telling everyone I know about him. That's one small thing I can do to help him win.

I really don't check out their videos much. Seen them on the Cape, of course, and been to the Beachcomber often enough too. But I rarely make the late night scene any more.

(54,527 posts)I only started spending summer vacation on the Cape in the 1980s, and never met Chandler until maybe 10 or 15 years ago. As a Texan living in Germany, the Cape is not exactly local for me, although I have been doing guest spots on shows on WOMR since 1986. Even got Jim Dean to do a guest spot with me last year!

(54,527 posts)But then the Cape is already 4000 miles from here, so by the time we get there, we tend to plunk ourselves down and relax. Wellfleet-Truro-P-Town, and we only leave that radius if there's some major catastrophe. Like the Russians decide to invade Germany, and I have 2 days to get back and save my guitars. It would have to be that drastic.

Just ignore the few that could only concentrate on some of your verbiage...seems to be a continuing problem that they can't understand the point of the message.
Go Bernie!

(2,100 posts)The problem is that while there are a whole lot of people out there who are hurting and suffering, there are a whole lot more that are doing just fine - or at least good enough to not seriously entertain the thought of a "revolution".

(4,510 posts)election? Where is he strong politically besides the issues? I mean can he make a good speech or come off presidential? I don't doubt he'd be a good president but does he have that intangible quality that draws people in.

(17,045 posts)...the general election than Hillary. If Hillary wins the primary, the anti-establishment vote on the left stays home. The perception is that she is an establishment candidate who represents politics as usual. She may have some of the right rhetoric and even some of the right record on a handful of issues, but the issue of the corruptive influence of money in politics and our rigged system is the most broadly resonant theme as we approach 2016, and Hillary does not project capacity or willingness to challenge the wealthy elite. Many people are sick of feeling their votes are being extorted on the basis of a handful of social issues while both sides continue to oversee redistribution of wealth from the bottom to the top. They've been staying home, and they will stay home again. If Bernie wins the primary, that will inspire great voter turnout. High voter turnout always favors the left.
Regarding sounding presidential and making good speeches, I can't get enough of him. He's got that cut-to-the-chase candor that we often love about Obama...and he walks the walk.

It's odd that you can envision him fighting someone who began the primary with 91% name recognition, hundreds of millions of dollars, the backing of the Democratic Party and its donors, but then can't see him, plus the Party, plus the Party's donor list, defeating an occupant of the clown car.
If the results of the elections of 2010 and 2014 did not kill the myth of centrists being electible, then it's a damned zombie meme that ate everyone's brains.

(3,747 posts)Political revolutions usually aren't worth all that much. And I'd hesistate to call what's currently happening (a liberal resurgence) a revolution. It's simply a swap from one side to another of a relatively limited part of the capitalist spectrum, and within the confines of the most establishment party ever to exist. And a rather right-wing bunch of neoliberals they are, too. Most don't even pretend to be liberal anymore.
You want change, you're going to need a lot more than a political revolution.

(14,597 posts)I am going to make this point clear - I am not talking about Bernie himself.
I think he is probably as close to the real deal as there is.
I noted this in a post I did earlier in the week talking about "Bernie" the campaign.
Until such time as it actually might be one, "Revolution" is political framing of his campaign by his supporters.
A "Revolution" is something MUCH, MUCH larger than what it is right now.
Right now, this is a political campaign that is getting a little wind in its sails, and the early stages of that, FAR removed from a "Revolution."
I know it is heady times for those people who have high ideas that Bernie champions.
But, the fact is, if the PRIMARY was today, he would lose rather badly to Hillary.
Now, people are going to get all salty about noting that, saying THERE IS LOTS OF TIME BETWEEN NOW AND THEN.
Well, yeah.
That is the point relative to folks wanting to call this a revolution NOW.
It ain't, it isn't even close to that.
Right now, it is a battle in the context of a group of DEMOCRATS who have a generally similar world view where Bernie's positions are pretty much the ideal. Even in that battle, he is a long shot to beat the cult of personality that is Hillary.
Talk of a "revolution" can't be anything more than breathless hyperbole until he actually gets past THAT monumental battle.
And, it is not in fact a "revolution" until such time as he gets past Hillary and then VERY, VERY deep level of stupidity that is this country, the corporate media doing the bidding of the republican party selling an aimless country the bullshit needed to distract them into gleefully voting against their own best interests.

support him. Bernie wants early debates to expose these corrupt assholes in Washington. They can't argue his points because he speaks the truth and the others will look ignorant. This needs to be presented to the American people. Ultimately, they will decide. And the ball is rolling with Bernie. I just read 40% Bernie, 49% HRC. Not bad considering he was <10% a month ago.
Go, Bernie, Go!!!!!
