Carson: Gay rights aren’t the same as civil rights

WASHINGTON — Ben Carson said Wednesday night that he was “irritated” by the comparison between the fight for same-sex marriage rights and the Civil Rights Movement because there’s no overt segregation against gays.

Speaking on Fox News’ “Special Report”, Carson elaborated on his remarks on CNN in March that he believes being gay is a choice because people “go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay.”

The GOP presidential contender told host Brett Baier that he “shouldn’t have allowed my emotions” into the conversation, but was reacting to CNN host Chris Cuomo’s line of questioning on the issue.

“I was a little bit irritated that he was equating the whole {gay marriage} issue with the Civil Rights movement. Because, quite frankly, I didn’t remember any times when there were signs up that says, you know, ‘everybody else here and gay people have to drink at this fountain,'” he said.

For a man with such an advanced education, you'd figure he knows better. It's not stupidity in his case, I don't think...it's malice.

He should be ashamed of himself.

He makes false analogies, not uncommon, to make it seem GLBT are claiming our struggle is the exact same or almost similar to the struggle AA experience. It is a lie. It is still legal in this country to fire gay people for being gay. Laws are now being enacted (see NC) to circumvent a possible positive decision from The SCOTUS in regards to marriage equality. Gays can be denied housing because their are gay. It wasn't that long ago that even having sex, which no one saw, was illegal.

He and those like him think "civil rights" is only about one movement; it isn't. While the AA move for equality was known as the Civil Rights movement, civil rights is defined as rights to personal liberty established by the 13th and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution and certain Congressional acts, especially as applied to an individual or a minority group. Our struggle to gain equality in all aspects of life is a "civil rights" movement.

400 years of oppression and slavery we're most hated people in this country then we finally get the right to shop in white stores by coming into the front door and now our culture is appropriated, the dominant society tells us who our heroes should be, and downplays our achievements. The cops abuse our rights, our wealth was taken away, and our leaders systematically killed. Gays face hate from their own families and some have a hard time keeping employment due to discrimination. They've been beaten and murdered for just being themselves. The lines are parallel but not the same thing. For one there are no specific hate groups for homosexuals though there are groups that hate them but it's more as an after thought when they go against blacks and other minority groups at the top of their hate list. This is no knock to gays who deserve their right to marry but embrace your own struggle and raise your own heroes you don't have to tie everything to the civil rights movement. White women did it in the 70's with their movement. Black people didn't do that to the Holocaust. Each struggle should be respected and seen for what it is individually. We should help each other out but there are many black people who are tired of their struggle being piggybacked and co opted by outside groups.

He is obviously a very intelligent and accomplished man, but politically he is on the same level as Sarah Palin. He is a product of the Republican propaganda machine where he doesn't know the difference between the rhetoric and reality.

Someone else doesn't have to be discriminated against in the exact same way in order to also face discrimination. Their civil rights don't have to be withheld in the exact same way, and the exact same civil rights don't have to be withheld, in order for them to also have their civil rights withheld.

He's a smart man and he knows this. He's just playing games. If you can't win on facts, you baffle them with bullshit.

When he dislikes something I've heard him say 'that's just schizophrenic!' like others who use the term 'retard' as a pejorative. It's very surprising and careless for a man of his education and also an MD to use a serious medical mental disorder to describe fairly minor issues.
