There are two reasons:

1.- He can self finance.

2.- We are at one of those populist moments, and he does appeal to more people than folks realize...

Not that I want him as President mind you, it would be a real nightmare. But I take him quite seriously. That said, I hope you are correct.

We are pretty evenly divided in this nation. There is no huge middle to grab anymore, this will be a base election and voting AGAINST Hillary will bring all the GOP to the polls. It will be like a cattle drive. Treating people who always vote Dem like their votes do not matter compared to 'undecided' voters is not a good way to bring out the base.
If Hillary want to give up sure votes to seek out 'moderates' cool, but it won't bring out reliable voters. That's how we lost the midterm, ignoring the base in favor of trying to get moderates that do not exist. I watched my party do it in my state. We, the far left stinky granola eating liberals got things done; MJ legalization, minimum wage tied to inflation, protected the environment... We did not manage to vote in a Democrat for the Senate. Because our Democrate was very moderate and tried to sound lije a republican to get the 'moderate' vote that did not exist.

I expect democrats to continue doing foolosh stuff for the next few cycles before they figure out that the base is not moderate. We will lose.

Another candidate might have gotten slightly better turnout, which would have been enough to defeat Nixon due to Wallace on the ballot.

But we can't really know. All we know is "electable" wasn't actually "electable".

Goodbye marriage equally. Women would kiss the right to choose goodbye. What makes you think that he can win.

Our poll experts said he wouldn't break double digits...

Then, "He won't break 20..."

Then "His ceiling is 30..."

Well whaduno 35. And he is definitely taking from Clinton's numbers.

Hmm...well...harumph...it's NH, right next to Vermont and you know whiiiiite.

Several shifts in the poll seem to explain much of Sanders' gain. Looking at the demographic breakdown in primary preferences, men, younger voters and liberals appear to have moved broadly toward Sanders in the last month. Among men, 52% backed Clinton in the May survey, that fell to 32% in the new poll, while 47% now support Sanders. Likewise, among liberals, a 51% to 16% Clinton advantage is now a 48% to 41% Sanders edge. And among voters under age 50, Clinton has fallen from majority support to a near even split in the new poll, 37% back Clinton while 39% favor Sanders.

And likely Democratic primary voters are now more apt to see Sanders as the candidate who "best represents the values of Democrats like yourself." Sanders trounces Clinton, with 41% of Democratic primary voters saying Sanders does, to 30% who chose Clinton. In the May poll, 38% said Clinton was tops on this question, with 22% choosing Warren and just 13% picking Sanders.

Sanders has also gained dramatically in favorability ratings among Democrats since May. In the new poll, 66% say they have a favorable view of the Vermont senator, while just 11% hold an unfavorable view. In May, 45% had a favorable view and 11% held an unfavorable one.

And the Vermont Senator also holds a big edge over Clinton as the most empathetic candidate in the field; 45% say he's the one who cares the most about people like you, compared with 24% who pick Clinton on that score.
