Today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is most often remembered as a crusader for racial equality, not economic justice. But those struggles were inextricably intertwined for the civil rights leader, whose 85th birthday is being honored this weekend. Even during his upbringing, as he wrote in 1958 [PDF], he knew that the inseparable twin of racial injustice was economic injustice.

(5,208 posts)And there was a good discussion about it. It's not so much about not taking MLK seriously. It's about the history of racism that exists within groups that mostly mostly focus on economic issues, like Unions. In order for black voters and hispanic voters to unite with the white worker, we have to trust that the white voter is going to fight with us on social justice issues too.

(5,178 posts)It is crazy. The racism so intrinsic in the system. I always say the only things that ever trickled down from Reaganomics were the morals & ethics they displayed for all to emulate.
Donald Sterling was a little glimpse behind the curtain of just how the corporate connected and wealthy view race.
Or just recently with the horrible Charleston tragedy. Learning Roof was lead down his path by Huckabee and wacko racist websites. Websites supported by politicians supported by corporations like Walmart and Aetna. The tentacles of the funding and indoctrination of our youth to hate run deep and not by accident.

I think Bernie's campaign believes they can unite us under an economic justice umbrella, and that's why he is staying on message.

(5,208 posts)Racial equality is of humongous concern for people of color. He's said a few things, but it needs to be louder. We need to know, he will make it a priority too.

when both will become ONE
When talking about Equality and Justice, no need to separate social and economic because both will be automatically part of the Package, that is a true Democrat.
