2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThom Hartmann told a tasteless, sexist anti Hillary joke on his show Thursday
The joke took the form of a letter to Ann Landers from a wife about a cheating husband who hasn't worked for 14 years, and thinks she might be a lesbian. The replay is to grow up and leave him since she is running for President. Now Hartmann is by any measure a supporter of Sanders over a long period of time. Is Sanders responsible for this? No he isn't. Nor is Hillary responsible for everything her supporters say or do. I can't link the item since I don't subscribe to his pod cast but I heard it twice on Sirius. Once live on Thursday and once taped today. He said it around 140pm.

(17,064 posts)...although I'm not a thin-skinned HRC supporter looking for slights. I suppose if you look hard enough, you'll convince yourself of their existence.
Bill's own actions write the jokes about him, so he only has himself to blame.
and I am going to win the Boston Marathon next year too. What a croc of shit.

(40,416 posts)He has some good ideas, but it all seems much too slick to me. Then there's the RT venue. They seem to like him, whereas I do not so much these days. He seems to be more marketing and bloviation than I am comfortable with. This even if I might occasionally agree with him, but not so much recently.
Maedhros
(10,007 posts)He used to be scholarly and information-based, but then someone must have told him to be more like Ed Shultz and bloviate more. He started making more screeds than arguments, and to my ear sounded uncomfortable doing so.
I haven't followed him for quite a while. My take is that he knows what he is talking about, but is trying to hard to be "edgy" and it is detrimental.
rjsquirrel
(4,762 posts)I caught him occasionally over the years if I happened to rent a car with XM/Sirius and often agreed with his views. But I have a new car with XM so I have listened more in the last year. And he's a fear monger on economics. His views are close to a lot of far right views on the economy, and he's wrong. We are not headed to a major crash because of quantitative easing or sovereign debt. The economy of the US is doing well on its fundamentals right now. We need wealth redistribution. But we have a lot of weatlh.
Unfortunately, I suspect it is because he relies on gold hustlers for advertising dollars.
Doctor Who
(147 posts)He does a lot of live reads for the same type of "BUY GOLD NOW, BEFORE THE ECONOMY CRASHES AGAIN!!!!!!!" That he used to make fun of Glen Beck for. Some of his earlier books on autism I thought were really good.

(5,217 posts)I don't know any talk show host to be more forthright, honest, humble and fair, even to his detractors.
I'll wager that this has been twisted or taken out of context.
dsc
(52,175 posts)He introduced the joke, told the joke, said the lesbian part might have been too far. If he were honest, fair etc, he would post transcripts that weren't behind a pay wall. I won't pay 30 dollars a month in order to get to his cast.
dsc
(52,175 posts)Dear Abby,
My husband is a liar and a cheat. He has cheated on me from the beginning, and, when I confront him, he denies everything. What's worse, everyone knows that he cheats on me. It is so humiliating.
Also, since he lost his job 14 years ago, he hasn't even looked for a new one. All he does all day is smoke cigars, cruise around and
shoot the bull with his buddies, while I have to work to pay the bills.
Since our daughter went away to college he doesn't even pretend to like me, and even hints that I may be a lesbian.
What should I do?
Signed: Clueless
Dear Clueless:
Grow up and dump him. You don't need him anymore! Good grief woman, you're running for President of the United States.
GoneFishin
(5,217 posts)dsc
(52,175 posts)and I'll be glad to oblige. It isn't my fault he doesn't have transcripts. And no, I won't pay 30 bucks for a pod cast.
Jacoby365
(451 posts)And I've been listening to Thom for six years.
dsc
(52,175 posts)backs up exactly what I said. Again, if he kept transcripts that were available we could settle this issue but he doesn't, so we can't.
GoneFishin
(5,217 posts)acknowledged the inappropriateness of the joke himself. In that context I might be persuaded that he repeated the joke.
dsc
(52,175 posts)His words were calling her a lesbian may have been too far since it was a right wing talking point. I don't recall his calling it sexist. Again, if he had transcripts this issue would be settled.
I don't see Hartmann bringing this up this joke just for laughs. I suspect someone is leaving out the context behind this. Was Hartmann talking about RW attacks on Hillary? Was this in the good, bad ugly segment? It appears tnat they are leaving something out here.
Snotcicles
(9,089 posts)it was a tasteless sexist.
dsc
(52,175 posts)but then why is every utterance of Gutierez and McCaskell Hillary's fault?
Iliyah
(25,111 posts)out right hatred for HRC.
Maedhros
(10,007 posts)but "out right hatred" is not accurate.
Absolute disgust with her policies? Yes. Pulling no punches with regard to challenging her candidacy? Yes.
Hatred? I don't think so. Accusing us of hatred is just a way of dismissing what we're saying as irrational.
arcane1
(38,613 posts)The utterances of people working in an official, paid capacity are 100% fair game.
I'm not too sure about Gutierez aside from him pretending he didn't know Sanders' name. In other words, he used dishonesty to sell his candidate.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)dsc
(52,175 posts)I would have thought it was clear from my post.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)Democrats who are working to get Hillary elected. All three of them used very nasty talking points aimed at Bernie Sanders. IF they were not speaking for her, she should detach them from her campaign and do it publicly.
Hartmann is a radio host, I have no idea what he said or in what context, but there is simply no comparison between him, and those three who clearly had a talking point to deliver. Now who is paying for these talking points?
I think we need to put a stop to this kind of dirty politics. If someone who actually is part of Bernie's campaign and an elected Democrat ever joined the Republicans, as those three did, using a right wing talking point against a political opponent, I would want them OFF his team instantly.
I sure wouldn't be looking for a way to justify it. As you appear to be doing.
There is no justification for what they did, none. They are all prominent in the Democratic Party and it just disgusted people frankly.
dsc
(52,175 posts)for several years. He is at least as much a supporter of Sanders as the other two are of Clinton.
morningfog
(18,115 posts)and have endorsed Hillary. They are party insiders and surrogates of Hillary's campaign.
Hartmann is a radio show host.
dsc
(52,175 posts)let's be real here. The fact that they are elected in their own right makes them, if anything, less of Hillary's repsonsibility not more.
morningfog
(18,115 posts)Hillary.
Do you think, honestly, that the Hillary Campaign did not know and approve of what Gutierez and McCaskell said? Seriously.
Jacoby365
(451 posts)then he wasn't actually telling the joke?
dsc
(52,175 posts)I don't recall him saying it was sexist. Again, he told the joke and if he were honest etc, there would be transcripts of his program just like there are of say Meet the Press.

I'll catch Brunch with Bernie on occasion.
madfloridian
(88,117 posts)Yes, you are right, the joke was inappropriate. But then using it to compare with the words of McCaskill is wrong.
I posted about the other times they have called us fringe. Read the links. Goes back years.
dsc
(52,175 posts)let's be blunt if a media figure who supported Hillary in 08 had told a joke as racist as this one is sexist people would have gone bananas. What she said was wrong and bad but not sexist or racist.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)is not justifiable no matter what anyone else did.
Let me ask you, did you agree with what they did?
dsc
(52,175 posts)most things I call bad and wrong I disagree with. But I do think sexism is worse than what either one of them said. Though his words come close to being as bad.

TIA.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)prominent people who ARE ON BERNIE'S 'team' who have used a nasty talking point such as they did against Bernie, against Hillary, please post their names because I for one would want them OFF his team as fast as possible.

i think hartmann was probably discussing what happened but not actually telling it as a joke .
i don'nt listen to him and never have but based on the story i read earlier about it i'm guessing that was probably what was going on .

I was cleaning the house, but I do recall it strange that he would bring up Dear Abby. Now I wish I had sat and listened.
I don't think Sanders is responsible. I think it was bad producing.
That is all I can say about that, dsc.
AZ Progressive
(3,411 posts)Thom tends to fear monger quite a bit and prop up conspiracy theories, so if I hear him, I hear him with the assumption that I have to take whatever he says with a grain of salt. He also brought up Guy Mcpherson, a climate change professor that claims that the magnitude of climate change will multiply in magnitude fast enough for the end of humanity within 20 years. This is why I don't hear him often.
Instead, I hear Norman Goldman, which tends to stick to the partisan wars and social issues, as well as give great legal insight due to his 20+ years of practicing law. He's on WCPT and KTNF (available through internet radio apps like Ootunes.)

(957 posts)Thom Hartman is simply being attacked because Bernie gets more media from him,he also is a source that speaks to Bernie's consitant record on issues.I think the original poster should "Grow up".
