snip from Bergen Record:
I am now ready to fight for the people of the United States of America, Christie said to a crowd of roughly 1,000 at his alma mater, Livingston High School. I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Republican nomination for president of the United States.
from the same article:
The capacity at the gym in Livingston was listed at 1,000 people, and it appeared at that limit. There were at least 50 media cameras, though national television coverage
but then....(also, same article)
More than a thousand demonstrators - mostly dressed in red and carrying banners and signs - congregated on the front lawn outside Livingston High School Tuesday morning to protest Governor Christie announcing his presidential bid. Most of the crowd was made up of public school teachers and other union members, but environmentalists, historic preservationists and Sandy victims also were present to voice their concerns.

I loves me some Republican announcements. Up next? Scottie Walker!

and p.s. 1000 protestors with very little encouragement, as I am on all kinds of teacher and union mailing lists and did not hear about this protest--otherwise I would have gone. It's within five miles of my house, after all. How easy would that be?
So--imagine if the unions had really pushed this--the protestors could have easily outnumbered his supporters.
Also: yesterday on the front page of one of the major papers--can't recall which one--there was a story about Sandy victims, still shut out of their homes.

(6,409 posts)Chris the Crusher vs. Scottie the Badger. The two are similar in their treatment of public education. Christie id probably ahead on graft points, while Walker is leading in the general ruin-your-state category.

(5,644 posts)After 14 years of watching Christie, a warning: He lies
Most Americans don't know Chris Christie like I do, so it's only natural to wonder what testimony I might offer after covering his every move for the last 14 years.
Is it his raw political talent? No, they can see that.
Is it his measurable failure to fix the economy, solve the budget crisis or even repair the crumbling bridges? No, his opponents will cover that if he ever gets traction.
My testimony amounts to a warning: Don't believe a word the man says.
If you have the stomach for it, this column offers some greatest hits in Christie's catalog of lies.
Don't misunderstand me. They all lie, and I get that. But Christie does it with such audacity, and such frequency, that he stands out....
He's been lying on steroids lately, on core issues like Bridgegate, guns and that cozy personal friendship with his buddy, the King of Jordan. I'll get to all that.
But let's start with my personal favorite. It dates back to the 2009 campaign, when the public workers unions asked him if he intended to cut their benefits.
He told them their pensions were "sacred" to him.
"The notion that I would eliminate, change, or alter your pension is not only a lie, but cannot be further from the truth," he wrote them. "Your pension and benefits will be protected when I am elected governor."
He then proceeded to make cutting those benefits the centerpiece of his first year in office....
Melissa Harris-Perry tried to warn him two years ago to "pump your brakes"...

(35,835 posts)which says something about how the state's citizens are taking this announcement.
also, it's not often that columnists come right out and call politicians liars, and especially columnists from the state's largest newspapers.
Nice find, stellar.
