Lincoln Chafee (D) raised less than $30,000 in his first quarter as a presidential candidate, Politico reports.
Most of the Chafee campaigns cash came from Chafee himself. He loaned $364,000, in addition to what he received from donors, giving his campaign about $329,000 in cash on hand.

(146,351 posts)that sure doesn't sound like much money to me. It's a matter of scale. A House representative doesn't necessarily have to spend millions to get elected, but a President sure does. Many, many millions. To start with, no presidential candidate can even be everywhere. He or she needs a paid staff, along with transportation costs and much, much more.
For presidential candidates, a successful primary campaign costs millions, just to get through the first primaries and Super Tuesday. A strong campaign organization is just the beginning of the stuff that costs money. Talented people don't come free. They get paid.
There will never be a time when millions of dollars aren't needed in a presidential primary by every candidate who is really trying to win. Never.

(146,351 posts)a viable candidate at all. I can't really imagine why he's in the primary race in the first place, and doubt that he will last past the first caucuses and primaries.
I'd love to ask him why he threw his hat in the ring.
