This has got to be one of my favorite #iacaucus moments so far - @MartinOMalley breaks out the guitar & sings!

(45,595 posts)I previously believed he'd come in 2nd, but his ground work effort is really out pacing everyone else.
Steve Chapman of the Chicago Tribune said this about him:
This was where his earnest speech became impassioned, his voice rising over building cheers: "In Baltimore, we took action to save lives by reducing record-high violence to record lows. We increased drug treatment to free thousands of our courageous neighbors from the scourge of drug addiction. ... Driver's licenses for new American immigrants, marriage equality and a ban on assault weapons: and we didn't just talk about it, we actually got it done!" On his mayoral record, O'Malley can point to documented changes that, in the post-Ferguson, Mo., era, seem incompatible. Overall crime fell more in Baltimore than in any other big city. At the same time, shootings by police dropped sharply.

[div class="excerpt"]And he seems to enjoy the part of the campaign that involves chatting and posing for selfies with voters. At the nearby White Star Ale House, before the dinner, I arrived 10 minutes early for his "meet-and-greet," only to find O'Malley already working a crowd whose numbers would have alarmed the fire marshal. He was still at it when I left an hour later.
Does any of this matter in a race against two far more famous candidates? Maybe not. He lacks Clinton's money and incomparable name recognition, and he lacks Sanders' visceral appeal to the Occupy Wall Street crowd. His narrow path to victory lies in convincing Democrats he's a fresh alternative to the recycled Clinton, but unlike Sanders can be elected.
Guess we'll find out in 6 long months.

Iowan at Beaverdale pub tells O'Malley: You were on fire at hall of fame dinner. I see you breaking out to the front of the pack.
He isn't giving speeches. He's relating to one Iowan at a time. He really likes being among the people, and it shows. Whether he wins the primary or not, he is winning over one person at a time.

(2,792 posts)He is kind, even to people who disagree with him.
I sure wish I had his energy. As a presidential candidate, he is the complete package, as far as I am concerned. If he stumbles in any way, he doubles his effort.
His apology to BLM was based on strength, not on weakness. Unfortunately, only people who understand strong moral character can appreciate who he really is.
His reply to Bush's criticism of his apology was classic:
I dont take sensitivity training from Mr. Bush, OMalley told reporters.
For O'Malley, speaking with others is not just a matter of getting his message across or saying what he believes. It requires, additionally, sensitivity to the point of view and feelings of others. O'Malley is all about the give and take of dialogue, not just "speaking at" other people. I think he is comfortable with one-to-one campaigning, and it shows.
