O’Malley calls for ‘comprehensive gun safety laws.'

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is calling for “comprehensive gun safety laws to save lives” in the wake of a series of public shooting over the past month.

“During the first 204 days of 2015, there have been 204 mass shootings: a mass shooting for every day of the year. These tragedies aren’t isolated incidents or even ‘accidents’ as some have called them — they’re part of a full-blown epidemic,” the Democratic presidential hopeful writes in an op-ed in the Boston Globe published Friday, http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2015/07/24/martin-malley-congress-needs-act-gun-reform/VHwtYH6qor1wVsy4u1n2mJ/story.html one day after a gunman killed two people in a Louisiana movie theater.

“We cannot let this become the new normal. As we mourn for the lives cut short — for the victims and the loved ones they leave behind — we can’t just sit by and wait for another tragedy to happen again.”

The former Maryland governor also notes last week’s shooting at military installations in Chattanooga, Tenn., as well as last month’s shooting in a historically black church in Charleston, S.C.

His plan calls for limiting all gun sales to “tightly regulated, licensed dealers,” which includes closing a loophole that allows gun sales at gun shows without a background check.

He also wants an assault weapon ban, a national gun registry to “help law enforcement track down dangerous criminals” and a requirement that guns are secured in private homes.

O’Malley also touts his efforts in Maryland, where he helped shepherd through gun control reforms that include a slew of the ideas he wants to extend nationally.

“Our goal in Maryland, as it should be for the nation, was to reduce mass shootings and keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” he writes.

For "all" candidates running. We know the republicans aren't going to do anything about this problem, but it needs to be turned into a public issue, one that I think the majority of Americans, no matter what their politics, want to see addressed. O'Malley has a plan to start fixing things, one I think any "sane" person could agree with. Nobody in civilian life needs to have military weapons, and I mean nobody. The laws need to change, and we need to start working on it now.

but I'm not holding my breath for any success; too damn much $ involved, as well as alleged 'personal freedom' bs.

EDIT! See HOW many DUers responding to this thread??? Martin O'Malley hands us solutions to problems, and Dems, a/k/a DU + friends, IGNORE!

probably amend that to simply "public safety" and work that in. Everybody knows what public safety means and knows we can't allow people to drive 80 mph on a city street...makes common sense to people...

O'Malley is coming across more and more as a very reasonable, personable candidate who might just emerge bigger than we thought he would. He's made a pretty impressive start!

Martin is a fine candidate. And I think you know how worked up DU always gets in anticipation of a prez election...I'm being careful of my involvement in GD: Primaries as a result...taking ultra care not to get too sucked into a fight...

Here's an old piece. He's clearly a supporter:

BALTIMORE, MD (4/16/14)- Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) is honored to present the 2014 Betty Tyler
Award to Maryland Governor Martin J. O'Malley for his outstanding leadership in protecting and advancing reproductive
rights in Maryland. The award will be presented at PPM’s 9th Annual Spring Gala event to be held on the evening of
Wednesday, April 30th at The Four Seasons Harbor East in Baltimore.

“At a time when women’s health and access to reproductive care is under attack across the country, Governor O'Malley
has protected the rights of women in Maryland," said Jenny Black, President & CEO of PPM. “For his outstanding record
of prioritizing Maryland women and women’s health, we are happy to recognize the leadership of Governor O’Malley at
Planned Parenthood of Maryland."

When an attack on Hillary can get well over 100 recs, dominate the front page, and accomplishes nothing but flame wars, posts on actual policy, plans to fix the problems with the issues that need fixing, simply get ignored. It's a shame that so many here just want to bash and trash, and not discuss issues, or explain how their candidate will actually "fix" the problems we face.

I admire you for the work you, Bigtree and others are doing to get the information out here on DU. I guess all we can do is keep posting and bumping up OP's so maybe some here who actually want to hear about what a candidate is going to do to fix things, and what they have already accomplished, can check out O'Malley's plans.

I've never particularly agreed with the concept behind the assault weapons ban, but oh well. The universal transfer procedure is a good idea.
