So what does the SCOTUS immigration ruling really mean?

So far I have heard only spin on the news media. I have heard from "they took the appetizer, salad and dessert but left the entree, the real meat and potatoes of the law to they took away the teeth and gave an order not to gum anyone.

For some reason I doubt either is true.

Does anyone know what it really means?

How will it affect states like Alabama?

... to either enforce (or not enforce, as the executive chooses) the will of Congress as expressed in national immigration law. It prevents the states from enforcing Federal immigration law. It gives the President the power to ignore the will of Congress as expressed in the nation's immigration law. It prevents the states from enforcing the will of Congress. This is an amazing (and a bit unprecedented) increase in power for the executive branch and a further weakening of the legislative branch.

This may be fine while we have a President we supposedly like, but I am always leery of further empowering the executive branch of the Federal government.
