2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo is Mitt's statement about "not focusing on the poor" but "on the middle class" a dog whistle to
white folks? Yes I know that there are more poor white people than poor black people and that there are plenty of middle class black people. But Mitt's association of Democrats and focus on poor people seems as if he could be trying to put some space between himself and a large Democratic voting group - blacks, particularly inner city blacks - in order to pander to white folks.

(118,925 posts)hatred of the "poor" that Newt was spewing.

(18,696 posts)I think he made the statement out of pure ignorance and the general sentiment on the right that poor people are too coddled by the government.
They always complain that people in poverty use food stamps to buy lobster, welfare checks on Cadillac payments, and rent subsidies on luxury condos. It figures that Romney sincerely holds those beliefs as well. After all, who could he possibly know on food stamps?

(42,770 posts)Don't get me wrong, this guy makes me gag....but I do know what he meant. Just simply
the very poor get help with food stamps, welfare, housing, etc. Rich are fine. Middle
class get no help.
think he was just looking at it from a strictly monetary viewpoint only.
The problem is - it goes against his own tax plan which hurts the poor.
Just shows he has zero political savvy AND he doesn't really know what the hell
he believes in or he would know he was hurting the people he is now saying
will be taken care of.

(1 post)Gag is an interesting word! The economy is bad and therefore there are a lot of people taking advantage of food stamps, welfare, housing, etc... The rich are richer and President Obama has given tax free loans to some of the richest. When they get to Washington, no holes are bared!!! it's "who knows who" and how much will you contribute to me!!! REALLY FOLKS!!! Wake up and smell the "politician" roses!! not so rosey!!! Special interest groups run our country......we have to change this NOW!!!!!!!

(17,656 posts)By saying he is "focusing on the middle class", Romney is trying to imitate President Obama's stance when he ran in 2008.

(3,245 posts)This sounded to me like this is a belief that he holds, not necessarily a party line or a platform stance.
I really think he doesn't care about the lowest income populations because he equates those social programs needed by them as being sufficient.
It's time to really start putting these comments alongside Boehner's and other comments that will now really start showing where a Romney Administration would go in conjunction with a Republican controlled House.
