Yikes. (More from the weight acceptance world.)

I thought we had a lot of scary hate directed at our little web forum. But the hate mail archive from the FA (fat acceptance) website Dances With Fat has missives that make my hair curl.

(Warning: reading any of the messages at the link could be upsetting. They contain a lot of pure hate for the overweight. The author includes her witty comebacks, but the folks who sent those comments have detached themselves from humanity.)

How can people be so cruel? These letters (read: hate-filled screeds) have really made me commit to supporting weight acceptance.

it is ok to hate fat people, especially when you are rich and can afford your organic produce from China.

because her blog is less about the trials of obesity and more about justification of her unhealthy lifestyle, condemnation of those who believe obesity is a healthcare issue, and actual misinformation about the effects of obesity.

I don't go around looking for bloggers to badger, but there are plenty of stupid people with dumb ideas who blog, are berated, and enjoy it.

Have you actually sifted through some of the responses? One or two may be well intentioned (even though we know what road get paved with those), but some of them, well, substitute the "n" word, "jew", or even "woman" for Fattie, and frankly many countries would not be allowing those sites to load, as they would be classified as hate sites. Let's not also forget that, as Susie Orbach pointed out

http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Feminist-Issue-Susie-Orbach/dp/0883659875

Fat IS a feminist issue: The rich blonde ladies can be thin because they have chefs cook for them, using ingredients that would cost more than most people's food budget for a month, have gym access, personal trainers, and they can have their doctor's write prescriptions for glorified crystal meth, aka "diet pills". Yet, the brown skinned single mother who needs to use hamburger helper is the demon because she has a big butt. I get really tired of coming to DU and reading crap that sounds all too much like Free Republic. Is the Brown single mom with a big butt to be hated by left and right?, Hath not a fattie eyes?

Sadly, like many Feminist issues, it is becoming a male issue also, as now, thanks to the Maxim magazines of the world, Men are expected to be able to blow half their income on vanity as well. I know some may think "Yeah, now you know how WE felt", to those ladies, i would say that the same creepy corps that made billions making you feel ugly are now wanting to suck males dry too, we need to hang together, or else we will both be dry husks.

It's one thing to try and stop Obesity, it's another thing to set yourself up as the healthy and holy, and rail at the sinners.

6. And I say
Wed Jun 13, 2012, 05:16 PM
Jun 2012

It's one thing to be overweight or obese and understand it is a personal issue, be proud of who they are, and not care what others think. It is another issue to blame everyone else, justify with false claims, and deny their own responsibility. I know many obese and over weight people, none feel the need to lie about it's cause.

It's the internet, people say and do dumb things.

"using ingredients that would cost more than most people's food budget for a month," this simply isn't true, that is the assertion that eating healthy is cost prohibitive.. I'm a chef and anyone can eat healthy for the same money as eating crappy foods, many choose not to..in fact I believe there was a thread on this very subject last week.

Oh, and obesity is an issue and feminism is an issue. There may be a lot of feminists who are on one side or the other of this issue

then it is all about them.

i still hold to, why the fuck would anyone care what another tells themselves to make it thru their day. what vested interest does some stranger have to pile on hurt for no reason.

that makes NO sense to me at all.

Just that she attracts them with her blog..and..if it were only "what another tells themselves to make it thru their day", you may have a point. It is in fact a very public blog, broadcasting what she is telling herself, for all the world to see and many believe what she is telling herself (and everybody else on the planet) is dishonest.

and responsibilities. There are much deeper issues involved.

It is also a feminist issue. Women today are constantly barraged with images of what we are supposed to look like. If we are not sexy made up and skinny we get passed over for jobs, relationships, and just general respect.

It's one thing to disagree, but when it comes to feminist issues, apparently for some it's not enough to disagree. They get ugly and nasty and bitterly hateful.

It's kind of a pattern of hatred toward women.

12. I saw a video that reminded me of this thread.

I had meant to check out her blog but forgot.

So glad I saw that video and was reminded.

Yes, the fashion industry, the media and the internet are part of the problem but all three of those are funded by our time, money and energy so ending this war starts with us and it’s not hard to participate. There is one simple thing that you could do right now that I think will have a major impact:

Stop all negative body talk. Right now. Seriously, right this minute commit the mental energy to noticing your thoughts and intentionally changing your thought patterns to stop thinking negative things about bodies. Including and especially your own body. Including thin people- size acceptance means all sizes. If we stop all negative body talk, if we decide that we are simply no longer willing to put others down to make ourselves feel better, if we choose to stop trying to make people hate the body they live in 100% of the time, if we choose to start loving and appreciating the body that we live in 100% of the time, if we realize that other people’s bodies, health and habits are none of our damn business (just like our bodies, health and habits are not a matter for public comment), if we teach these values to our children, we will start to see a massive change for the better. And we can do it starting right freaking now.

I love that she included thin people. All the 'eat a sandwich', 'real women have curves' crap is no different than the abuse and harassment that all the fat-shaming bullies engage in.

Oh, and this is the video I saw posted on facebook which reminded me...

Cruel people seek a convenient target. Unfortunately many many many will enable them in doing so.
