BY LEE FANG
The conventional wisdom on Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is that hes a charming if impractical dreamer, a pie-in-the-sky socialist whos good at inspiring young people and aging hippies, but hopeless at the knife fighting that real-life politics requires.
(snip)
Over the years, Sanders has tucked away funding for health centers in appropriation bills signed by George W. Bush, into Barack Obamas stimulus program, and through the earmarking process. But his biggest achievement came in 2010 through the Affordable Care Act. In a series of high-stakes legislative maneuvers, Sanders struck a deal to include $11 billion for health clinics in the law.

As one would expect, the program was largely met with plaudits from patients and public health experts, but it has also won praise from even the biggest Obamacare critics on Capitol Hill. In letters I obtained through multiple record requests, dozens of Republican lawmakers, including members of the House and Senate leadership, have privately praised the ACA clinic funding, calling health centers a vital provider in both rural and urban communities.

Regardless of the politics, the success of health centers has been particularly satisfying for Sanders, who can simply point to his own state as a reminder of its impact. One in four Vermonters are now served by more than 50 health centers throughout the state, according to the senators office. Just last month, a new federally qualified health clinic opened in Shoreham, Vermont, to provide dental care, physicals and medication for common diseases.

What about his Veterans Health Care Bill which also passed?

I have every confidence that he will fight for what he is campaigning on. At the very least.

(7,306 posts)You have an employee that's super dooper good. Employee wants a promotion. Employee is denied that promotion due to exemplary performance in present position. Employee is punished for being really good in present position.
I understand the reasoning behind your statement but it's not fair to Sen. Sanders or others in the same position (Like Sen. Warren. Seen the same argument for her). Need to "promote" Sen. Sanders and find a suitable replacement.

(50,983 posts)When Bernie speaks about community health centers he isn't doing it out of loyalty to some consortium that will provide an undisclosed future monetary reward. He is doing this out of a love and concern for the well being of the American people.
Contrast and compare.
Often today's politicians no longer even pretend to prioritize the needs of human beings.
Bernie should not be the exception. Bernie should be the example, the model, for any state or national office holder.
This man can become our next president. Do not believe the sockpuppets that say otherwise.
After decades of in your face dishonesty much of the American electorate has become more adept at ferreting out lies and weasel words. I hope the liars are going to find it ever more difficult to win office.
Well stated!

(8,175 posts)And probably eye clinics as well. I know I could put both to good use. As it is, I pretty much do without.
