Buttigieg makes new effort to talk race, reach black voters

From lunch with a civil rights leader in Harlem to meetings at a historically black university in South Carolina, Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is making a new, concerted effort to appeal to African American voters and put behind him criticism of his record on race.

His main strategy: Talk less, listen more.
“I know what I believe, I know what my values are, I’ve got policy ideas,” the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana said. “But I know I’ve got a lot to learn and I’m ready to make sure I’m understanding the concerns that are top of mind for the different audiences I speak to, to make sure what I have to say rhymes with what they’re most concerned about.”

He had lunch at the iconic soul food restaurant Sylvia’s with the Rev. Al Sharpton, the civil rights leader, who encouraged him “to engage with people who may not find their way to me who I need to go out and find my way in front of,” Buttigieg said.

He’ll spend May 5 and 6 in South Carolina, where he’ll meet with African American leaders in Charleston and participate in a round-table discussion at South Carolina State University, the state’s only public, historically black university. A stop also is planned at a conference of clergy focused on equity and justice in Columbia. Buttigieg’s campaign says he won’t have a speaking role.

Buttigieg says he will speak in South Carolina about his agenda for America as a whole and black Americans in particular, ranging from home ownership to health, criminal justice reform and voting rights.

I’m looking forward to hearing about his ideas about race, particularly voting rights and criminal justice reform. Glad he met with Rev. Al.

With Biden in the race, despite his flaws, he has a huge advantage in that department over Buttigieg.

Why didn't Biden announce in time to participate in the She the People forum. You would think someone with so much confidence with that audience would have done so. It's not like he and consultants had no way of knowing it was planned.

and a better Democrat.

What his strongest critics in South Bend agree on is that after he returned to Afghanistan, he spent a lot time listening. One thing he found out was the that the greatest damage to South Bend from his decision to demote the city’s first Black Policy Chief was not how it deepened the racial decide but how it splintered the black community.

Buttigieg’s then made an effort to be responsive to competing community interests rather than looking for an authoritative representative.

Pete Buttigieg Talks Being 'The Other' With Rev. Al Sharpton

Political activist and onetime Democratic presidential candidate Rev. Al Sharpton says he was impressed by a member of the 2020 Democratic field, South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, with whom he lunched today in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood.

The two met for lunch at Sylvia’s, a famed soul food restaurant in Harlem and a popular stop for political candidates. During the lunch, which was live-streamed online, Sharpton mentioned his gay sister and praised Buttigieg’s willingness to be open as a gay politician. “I thought he was very much authentic,” Sharpton said of Buttigieg, adding that the mayor went to every table in the restaurant to speak with customers and was well-received.

At a press conference after the lunch, journalist Terrell Starr asked Buttigieg if he had reconsidered his opposition to voting rights for people who are incarcerated. Buttigieg said he had not, but he did support restoration of voting rights once these people are released. He added that he’s for decriminalization of marijuana, and if that comes to pass, people who’ve been imprisoned for marijuana-related crimes should be fully reintegrated into society.

The two discussed the need to challenge bigotry on all fronts, whether it’s racism, homophobia, or anything else. African-Americans and LGBTQ people have in common being “the other,” Buttigieg told Sharpton. Donald Trump's presidency, Sharpton added, has motivated those who are 'other' to unite in resistance.

On MSNBC, shortly after the lunch, Sharpton quoted Buttigieg as saying, “I represent ‘the other.’ … I’m running for the other.”
