(37,648 posts)But I doubt he'd be picked, if Biden gets the nomination. He's part Hispanic, he's from Texas - 2 good things. But 2 white males on the ticket I don't think will be popular.

(2,113 posts)You just have to care about people and listen and show up to hear people's concerns. Beto is all about that.

(37,648 posts)A white male nominee might need to choose a minority or female, as well as someone from a certain geographic area, to represent the Party's interests, to appeal to all the members of the Party. Af. Americans and Hispanics make up a large part of the Democratic base. And now we also have the woman push for high office.
Strategy and politics. Not that Beto would be unworthy. But there are several who are worthy and would fill the minority or female slot that is probably needed.

Based on current polling and trends, Beto won't make it past the first few primaries. Stacey Abrams said on the View that IF she decides to get into the 2020 race, it won't be for "second place".
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(81,709 posts)Robert Francis O'Rourke was born on September 26, 1972, at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, Texas to Pat Francis O'Rourke and Melissa Martha O'Rourke, née Williams.[2][3] He is a 4th generation Irish American.[4][5][6][7][8] He has two younger sisters, the younger one born intellectually impaired.[9][10][11][12][13] In his infancy, his family gave him the nickname "Beto", a common Spanish nickname for first names ending in "-berto", initially to distinguish him from his namesake grandfather.

(2,113 posts)Which means he can reach out to and mobilize more hispanic voters than most candidates could. Being from a border town really, really helps him.

(81,709 posts)BTW The map shows Cruz's strength outside the cities. (Texas Republicans are robotic voters, and Cruz is an entrenched figure in Texas GOP politics - this is a state where some complete unknown named George P. Bush was elected Land Commissioner and reelected because of his last name, and the attorney general was reelected while under criminal indictment)
Beto changed a lot of minds in red counties during his ground campaign to add to his total
P.S. El Paso (22) ranks just below Boston (21) in population
