Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumApril 30 Quinnipiac poll found 56% of Dems & Dem-leaning thought Biden most likely to defeat Trump.
He was followed by Sanders at only 12%.
I ran across this in a new CNN article published just a few hours ago:
https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/05/politics/biden-trump-poll-policies/index.html
No other candidate even came close Biden's number when voters were asked if they thought each individual candidate could win against Trump. The next best were Sen. Bernie Sanders (12%) and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg (4%).
I remember seeing the Quinnipiac poll numbers on voters' Democratic candidate preference, which had Biden over Sanders 38-11.
But I don't recall reading that over half of Democrats thought Biden had the best chance of beating Trump, with Sanders 44 points behind.
No wonder Sanders supporters like Chris Hayes seem so desperate to stop people from considering electability.
Link to the Quinnipiac poll:
https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=2617
California Sen. Kamala Harris has 8 percent of Democrats and Democratic leaners, with 5 percent for former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas. No other Democratic contender gets more than 2 percent. This compares to results of a March 28 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University National Poll, showing Biden with 29 percent, Sanders with 19 percent, O'Rourke with 12 percent and Harris with 8 percent.
In today's survey among Democrats and Democratic leaners:
56 percent say Biden has the best chance to beat President Donald Trump, followed by Sanders at 12 percent;
44 percent say Biden would be the best leader, with Sanders and Warren at 11 percent each;
23 percent say Biden has the best policy ideas, with Warren at 19 percent.
Among Democrats, 25 percent want a presidential candidate who focuses on fighting President Trump, while 70 percent want a candidate who focuses on other national issues.
"The Democratic primary race suddenly gets real with a fast start by former Vice President Joe Biden and a very clear indication from voters that he is the only candidate who can send President Trump packing 18 months from now," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
"The good news for Mayor Pete Buttigieg is that voters seem ready to accept a gay man as president. The bad news for Buttigieg is that voters believe it just isn't going to happen."
Emphasis added to that part of the press release.

(2,208 posts)Who the heck DID they poll, an Old Folks home? lol
Seriously consider this part:
"No other candidate even came close Biden's number when voters were asked if they thought each individual candidate could win against Trump. The next best were Sen. Bernie Sanders (12%) and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg (4%)."
Mayor Pete at 4%, a political novice on the national and even state level, is considered more electable than Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Andrew Yang, Amy Klobuchar... see the pattern?
ALL those women and people of color are BELOW 4% electability?!?
The poll responders think only WHITE MEN are electable?
To quote President Obama: C'mon man!
Oh well, time will tell, but something seems off with this poll.

(49,138 posts)that when Democratic and Democratic-leaning registerd voters were asked which candidate they thought had the best chance of beating Trump, 48% of those age 18-49 chose Biden (with Sanders at 18% for that age group), and 64% of voters 50 years old and older chose Biden (with Sanders in second place but with only 7% of that age group).
Since the final results were close to an average of those numbers, apparently Quinnipiac polled approximately equal numbers of voters 18-49 and voters 50+.
Which I believe would match pretty closely with who's likely to vote.
The results do NOT suggest that "only white men are electable."
They do suggest that so far, at least, voters don't see anyone else running that they think is nearly as electable as Joe Biden.
Even if their personal preference would be another candidate.
Note that this same poll showed Biden at 38% instead of 56% when voters were polled simply on their candidate preference in the primary.
18% of those responding felt that even if they'd prefer someone else winning the primary, Biden would still be the strongest candidate against Trump.
The increased percentage when people were asked who'd be most likely to defeat Trump didn't come from Sanders supporters, apparently. It came largely from Buttigieg supporters (10% for primary preference, only 4% for most electable), Warren (12% for primary preference, only 3% for electability), and Harris (8% for primary preference, only 2% for electability).

That's the bottom line result of that poll and I am glad you posted that in your OP.
So all the women and all the minorities are below 4% electability if they were running against trump. According to those poll responders.
But yeah, I respect Quinnipiac as a poll and I was joking a bit about the results, but something still seems off about it all.
Time will tell.

(49,138 posts)Remember that these are the same people who voted for Obama and Clinton.
The poll results don't mean that they're prejudiced against women and minorities. They're considering specific individuals, and those individuals against Trump.

(8,144 posts)Needs re-examination. It is a myth, with the underlying assumption being that these groups do not vote on merit, that there is no diversity within diversity.
As well, It has also been falsely, assumed that the youth vote, without recognizing, again, any diversity in demographics, in politics, will vote only for candidates under 50. That assumption, at least with college students, has been debunked, historically and in recent polling.
We need to stop using the old X wont vote for a Y paradigm when we talk about candidates.
Did not bear out when America elected Obama and is not shaping up as true today.
Still, I do agree that a Biden/Harris ticket would engage and excite across voting communities, but primarily because both candidates compliment each other and are individually strong.

(25,525 posts)Sanders and Mayor Pete are as much also-rans in this poll as the rest of the candidates. All it really tells us it that a solid majority thinks that Biden is the one best positioned to beat Trump.
Also, it has nothing to do with relative electability. It has to do with who can beat Trump.

(6,240 posts)trump is afraid of Biden. Part of trump's game plan is to win Pennsylvania. Biden was born and raised in Pennsylvania. Biden/Harris can beat trump. She would be the first woman VP. She would be positioned to be president sooner rather than later.
