The 20-year argument between Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren over bankruptcy, explained

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) was the first Democratic 2020 hopeful to take a direct swing at former Vice President Joe Biden since he got into the race, accusing him of being “on the side of the credit companies” in a fight that launched her political career a decade ago.

Warren’s quarrel with Biden isn’t personal. It’s about a 2005 bankruptcy bill he supported as a senator. Warren opposed the bill so vehemently that its passage inspired her transition from a Harvard bankruptcy law professor, who studied middle-class economics, to a senator and now a presidential hopeful.

“I got in that fight because [families] just didn’t have anyone and Joe Biden was on the side of the credit card companies,” Warren said after an April rally in Iowa. “It’s all a matter of public record.”

Political junkies know that when a candidate goes negative, they are losing. Biden/Harris would be a formidable ticket.

I remain undecided on my choice in the primary. I don't consider everyone who speaks uncomfortable truths as negative political junkies.

Just my opinion, thanks for sharing yours.

and the credit card industry, and she fought.

So many politicians speak about being champions of the middle class and tout middle class credentials but it amounts to smoke not fire.

The credit card banks get the steak and we get the drippings-which fall into the ashes and are inedible.

Congress has been blowing smoke at us for a long time on this and I think it is a big factor in income inequality. People are pressured to pay inflated medical bill, fall behind because few can afford the health care prices and end up paying interest rates that we're considered usury and outlawed in the past.

It is like borrowing from the Mafia but the Law becomes the enforcer.

Instead of the law working for the people it works for the modern day bank/mobsters.

This is a fight over position and policy and perspective. As Warren said, "it's a matter of public record."

If you agree with his position and support his voting record, then there's no problem. If you don't like the stand Biden took, don't shoot the messenger.

If I were to vote in a presidential

Seems to me Warren didn't use it as an attack. She was asked about it, and made a short statement and referred people to the public record. Very professional while being truthful.

But the bill was so harmful to the average American who got hit by a huge medical bill. Which, to me, is one of the few instances that warrants a bankruptcy. (The bill doesn't affect bankruptcies like the ones Trump used.)

I would think that Biden and supporters would not see talking about it as a bad thing. If there is regret over the outcome, why not own it and vow to do something different?
All candidates have made mistakes and taken problematic positions. It's informative to see if they would rather it stay hidden because they know it's unpopular and they still see it as a positive contribution.

"It wasn't bad until a lot of people knew about it" is a strange position for someone who has spent most of their life on a public stage.

(I finally just got a chance to read this)

I remember quite clearly when this happened and it's effect on a member of my family.

I was watching this bill very closely.

someone in my family just got divorced and their spouse ran up a huge debt as "revenge" (there was no cheating involved, the person who ran up the debt was just a miserable person), because my family member couldn't take being married to this person anymore. All the credit cards were in my family members name.

my family member was left with an enormous debt. it was a horrible divorce and as a result (the spouse had a better lawyer I guess), my family member was saddled with the debt.

I had been watching this bill wind through congress and let my family member know what was happening.

quickly my family member got a bankruptcy attorney and quite literally, filed for bankruptcy the day before it passed. (granted, it probably wouldn't have gone into effect for a while but it was more a personal victory)

afterwards, if the filing hadn't happened then, my family member would have been in debt probably for the rest of their life never ever seeing the light of day.

I never ever forgot this, regarding Joe Biden. I added it to the pile that included his roll in clarence thomas and Anita Hill. at the same time, wasn't surprised since Biden represents credit card land.

and full disclosure, if Biden gets the nomination, I will hold my nose, but I will vote for him.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
