20 year war between Biden and Warren over bankruptcy, explained

en. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) was the first Democratic 2020 hopeful to take a direct swing at former Vice President Joe Biden since he got into the race, accusing him of being “on the side of the credit companies” in a fight that launched her political career a decade ago.

Warren’s quarrel with Biden isn’t personal. It’s about a 2005 bankruptcy bill he supported as a senator. Warren opposed the bill so vehemently that its passage inspired her transition from a Harvard bankruptcy law professor, who studied middle-class economics, to a senator and now a presidential hopeful.

“I got in that fight because [families] just didn’t have anyone and Joe Biden was on the side of the credit card companies,” Warren said after an April rally in Iowa. “It’s all a matter of public record.”

The bill made it harder for individuals to file for bankruptcy and get out of debt, a legal change that credit card companies and many major retailers had championed for years. The bill passed Congress with large majorities, but most Democratic senators, including Barack Obama, voted no. Biden voted yes and was widely seen at the time as one of the bill’s major Democratic champions.

Sadly, this is another example Biden voting with the Republicans. President Obama and most other democrats in the Senate voted against this bill. Biden voted for it. Has he ever apologized for doing so?

Delaware has a lot of banks which issue credit cards. Those banks employ thousands of Delaware voters.

As a U.S. Senator Joe Biden's primary purpose was to advocate in the best interests of the citizens of DELAWARE!

As Jose pointed out a huge number of those hard-working, tax-paying Delaware are employed by the bank that issue credit cards. Voting against the employers of Delaware is a great way to become a former senator.

It's easy to take a stand when there will be no backlash from the people that control your next senate election.

He was:
The preference OF THE PEOPLE
He was elected BY THE PEOPLE
His duty was to vote FOR THE PEOPLE
.... Of DELAWARE ....

He was not:
Tasked with representing the citizens of the other 49 states
Supposed to be voting with a bid for POTUS in mind

He voted the correct way on the bankruptcy based on his role at the time.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

This is roughly the defense that is put up about Bernie's votes on some industries that directly affected his constituency. It's roughly the defense that Manchin gets as well. I would point out that there were far more PEOPLE OF DELAWARE that were going to be adversely affected by these laws, than were employed by them. He was supposed to vote for ALL the people of Delaware.

If tens of thousands of MA residents were employed by big banks
If the law in question would have caused closures/layoff affecting the residents
If the voters overwhelmingly opposed the law

I wonder if she would have taken the same position.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

If we go with a centrist, hopefully it won't be one who was beholden to special corporate interests.
