Sanders: I Can Defeat Trump By Speaking To His Base, "Exposing Him For The Fraud He Is"
Sen. Bernie Sanders told MSNBC on Thursday that his strategy for defeating Donald Trump in 2020 will be to speak to his working-class base and "expose him as the fraud that he is."
"Trump essentially lied to the American people," Sanders said. "Who were hurting, and for too many years the Democratic leadership ignored that pain and ignored the midwest and the flyover states."
"So you expand the base, talking to working people and young people, and we expose Trump for the fraud that he is... when he campaigned on being a friend of the working people," he explained. "You do that, I think I can win. I can defeat Trump and every poll that I have seen suggests we are ahead of Trump, and I think that is the correct way to go forward."

(10,854 posts)He's been repeating the same spiel for decades; it's ingrained and is why he sounds exactly like the Bernie from the last campaign.
What you see and hear is what you get, same old, same old.
Which is why I think we see the drooping poll numbers; the words, the vague or unsatisfying answers (I'll figure out foreign policy once I'm Prez. In the meantime ask Obama) are past their sell date.

(25,845 posts)That the primary was rigged, he's the only progressive and They will stop at nothing to prevent the revolution. As The Atlantic put it, it's "a tale Sanders tells of Democratic politics in which he is already the central figure ... . Some of the tale, though, comes closer to solipsistic embellishment, like when Sanders says in his stump speech that 'a funny thing happened over the last four years' and ticks through Democratic support for investment in infrastructure, prioritizing climate change, and reforming the criminal justice system -- all of which were top focuses for Barack Obama."

He in no way panders to those voters and because he is courteous...they usually hear him out too, and that is how you change hearts and minds. You don't do it by attacking or minimizing. You do it by creating an opening to reach them and then planting the seeds. That's what Beto is so incredible at doing.

(37,648 posts)No. Trumpers lost their souls, when they accepted caging children and sending them hundreds of miles away from their parents without keeping records of who their parents were. Trumpers really did accept that as "not my problem. It's THEIR fault." Hearing about toddlers crying and trying to sleep on concrete floors in cages didn't bother Trumpers.
You can't use logic with such people. They are a lost cause. They KNOW he lies. They KNOW he's a fraud. They KNOW he didn't pay taxes. They KNOW he's racist and courted neo-Nazis. They don't CARE.

(7,277 posts)Sanders modus operandi last time round was to rail against the Democratic Establishment. This time he blames the failure of the Democratic leadership to look after the Midwest and heartland
OUR revolution and Justice Democrats are an insurgency that is more socialist thn Democratic. Theirs is not a policy dispute with the left wing of the Party, but a contest for power.
The last part is the punch line of an apocryphal story Walter Reuther used to tell against R.J Thomas, the previous president of the UAW. A critical meeting to unionise Ford was a fiasco. Thomas addressed the workforce, saying our revolution, will mean everyone will be driving a Lincoln. When a worker said he didnt want s Lincoln, Thomas lost his temper: Come the revolution comrade you will do as youre damn well told
The point of the story is when all else fails Socialists (Thomas was a Trokskyite) will revert to authoritarianism.
Hence why oblique joke about what could happen if Sanders failed to win over Trumps white male base.

(25,845 posts)Racial anxiety, not economic. Or maybe he does know. Whatever. Without the racist stuff the economic message doesn't work.
"In a 2016 survey, most Republicans agreed with this statement: 'People like me are asked to make too many sacrifices that benefit people of another race.' Research ... has shown that a sense of discrimination or competition with minority groups increases whites' solidarity with other whites and opposition to minority groups.Trump's campaign appealed directly to this very sense of economic and cultural threat. Trump support was strongly correlated with whether Republicans thought that whites are unable to find a job because employers are hiring minorities. By contrast, Trump support was only weakly correlated with whether respondents were worried about losing their own jobs. Consistent with a long line of research showing that group interests are more potent politically than self-interest, economic anxiety was channeled more through white identity politics than it was through Trump supporters' concern for their own personal well-being."

(9,138 posts)The 2016 elections and the 2018 elections showed that there are still very dark, hateful, and powerful currents in our countrys political psyche. Most of Donnies base is going to turn out for him regardless of how much and how hard you and other Democratic and progressive good guys try to address jobs, health care, education for their children and grandchildren, safe and untainted food, and the need to fight for clean air and water. Most of Donnies base now feel that its OK to be ugly and cruel and are willing to let their dark sides overrule both their better natures and good common sense.
The best Democrats can do is to recruit new voters, turn out OUR base, and try to peel voters away from the coalition that put that horrible man in the White House.

Thats precisely the wrong way of looking at things, and its based on the mistaken belief that the path to victory in 2020 only requires winning back Trump supporters. It misses the much larger issue at hand: Democrats simply wont stand a chance in 2020 if we cant energize African American voters.
