Pete Buttigieg gambles with criticism of identity politics

The Hill

Pete Buttigieg has drawn the 2020 presidential field into a fraught debate over race, warning Democrats that identity politics is a dead end as the party seeks to win back the white working-class voters that broke for President Trump in the past election.

Speaking at an LGBT gala over the weekend in Las Vegas, Buttigieg, who is gay and has spoken openly about his own struggles with identity, warned that “so-called identity politics” has contributed to a “crisis of belonging” in the country that has “divided and carved up” people of different backgrounds.

The remarks are a gamble for Buttigieg, a white man with a Harvard pedigree, who has struggled to attract the support he’ll need from people of color, even as his presidential campaign has caught fire among white Democrats.

A Post and Courier survey of South Carolina Democrats released over the weekend found Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., at 18 percent support among white voters and zero percent among black voters.

Pete’s discussion of identity and politics at the Human Rights Campaign was one of the most thoughtful and nuanced contributions I have heard

And, at times, brilliant -

“We are told we have to choose between supporting an auto worker and a trans woman of color, without stopping to think about the fact that sometimes the auto worker is a trans woman of color, and she definitely needs all the security she can get.”

“The wall I worry about most isn’t the president’s fantasy wall on the Mexican border that will never get built anyway. What I worry about are the very real walls being put up between us as we get divided and carved up.”

show African Americans who he is. Part of the problem is side-stepping prejudice , but another that he is a shy, reserved man. It takes a closer look to see the compassion and commitment to justice that motivate him.

5. Not smart. While, male, Dem candidates should treat the phrase "identity politics" like...

it's a third rail, I don't care how nuanced and brilliant many think it is. He has zero support from AAs and he's re-introducing this term that burned Sanders in 2016. Not smart, at least come up with another term to discuss an auto worker v a trans woman, or both rolled into one.

A candidate doesn't get anywhere in this party without the support of AAs and other POCs. And what is with this tilting-at-windmills pandering to white, working class, repug voters? They made their switch over to the repug party many presidential cycles ago so why would the most unlikely candidate to get them to switch back, let's face it, a guy with a husband, think he's the one who can get them to switch?

Sanders found out in 2016 that it doesn't work.

7. Sigh. Buttigieg is identity politics personified, without even saying that he is.

In the gay community, it has often been said that being out is a political act. Mayor Pete stands on the shoulders of those who came before him that leveraged their identity to form powerful coalitions that made political gains.

This is the first thing I've been disappointed about with Mayor Pete. :-/

other than a phrase or two?

Answer: It’s opinion piece clickbait which grotesquely mischaracterises what Buttigieg was saying.

But, saying something disparaging about identity politics at a gay event seems short-sighted.

Another name for identity politics is community organizing. That strategy worked for Obama, and will work for the next candidate. Stacey Abrams is masterful at explaining why identity politics isn't a slur.
